weight difference between roll bar materials?

im looking to do weld in a 6 point wolfe bar and was wondering:

the difference between mild steel and chromoly is over 100 dollars, why is one so much more expensive then the other? i know chromoly is alot lighter, in a cage like this anyone have a rough idea of how many pounds lighter? and is there any other benefits to having chromoly? thanks for any help

Its not worth it to have the chrome moly in a car slower than a 8.00 IMO

It also has to be tig welded....it is lighter but not that much for a 10-11 sec car I just never thought it was worth it

How much weight you save depends on what you are building. An NHRA "roll bar" (11.50 - 10.00) is mostly 1.75" tubing, and mild steel has to be 0.118" will thickness and chrome moly 0.083" wall thickness. Mix in the 1.25" rear support (0.118" mild steel and 0.065" chrome moly), and the average 6-point roll bar will be about 1/3 lighter. A 90# mild steel bar will show a saving of about 30# in chrome moly.

A "cage" (under 10.00) is much more complex, but should show similar % savings. In a cage, there are some bars that can bo 0.049" vs. 0.118" in mild steel (

also the .118 MS has to be .118 all over, so most guys use .134" to be safe, .120" has thin spots in it sometimes and will not pass

alright so what im using will be 1.75 inch tubing x .134 steel. so i would expect to save about 33% using chromoly?is that accurate?.

What thickness chrome moly does Wolfe use? Why not just ask them for the actual weight difference of the two kits?

I think they have the weight of each kit on their website.

cage in MS 135#
CM 95#

Only 40#....keep in mind this has to be tig welded.....so the price of labor will triple easy.

The strange/ aerospace fron't brake kits seem to take quite a bit off wt. off also, more than a k-member/a-arms.

I would go MS and get some other stuff, unless your going to go really fast.
