URGENT: Anybody had a problem installing a STB?

Just wondering because I'm tryiny to install my UMI one and there are 2 problems.

1) The brace doesn't fit the mold of the car, meaning that I can sort of tighten one side down but the other side will refuse to go down (I can't even start threading the nut on the outermost side).

2) There is a little part of the A/C line in the way. It looks like a little clip that connects the hose to the line below it.

If anybody can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thought it would be a 15min job but now it's just starting to become a bother.

Got the A/C thing figured out. Just moved the connector a tad futher down the lines. Now the damn thing just has to be able to be tightened down.

Anybody think I might have gotten the wrong part? It says the right part # on the sale sheet though.

Make sure you sit all four holes over the bolts before installing any nuts. Start at one side place if over the 2 bolts and then do the other side. Once the all four bolts are though the holes then place one nut on each side and go from there. Moving the A/C clip and working around the lines is normal

Has the car been wrecked, I have heard of this before on vehicles that have been wrecked before?

No, the car hasn't been wrecked. Really it sorta looks like this on one side:

\ This is the STB
_ This is the car.

It just doesn't line up on one side as in, the STB itself will not seat to the car.

Jack up one side of the car as you try to install it. Over time the shock towers can bend ******ds if driven hard without the brace. I had to jack one side up to install mine originally.

As you jack the wheel up the studs should move and the brace should drop onto the studs.

I'm sure you've already checked this, but you don't have the STB backwards do you?

No, I checked it and I don't even think it can fit on backwards. And I just jacked it up to no avail. I can yank if off the 2 good studs and throw a nut on the outer most one (not tightening, just catching the stud) and it won't go down even forcefully on the other side. It just looks like it was made to fit on one side and the other side is all messed up. I have no freaking clue why this 15min job is turning into an all day thing.

Well, I just stood it up, it measures differently. It's about 1 5/8" off the ground on one side and almost 2" on the other. Think that might be a problem?

Re: URGENT: Anybody had a problem installing a STB?

The problem is that the studs that stick up through the shock towers are not perfectly veritcal. They point inwards slightly, meaning that you can't alway get the brace holes on both sides over the very top of the studs.

The solution is to put the brace over the studs on one side. Then jack the opposite side of the car and let the wheel hang down. Remove both the 2 nuts off the shock tower studs, and the 2 bolts out of that side of the tower. Then push the wheel down, retracting the studs until the top of the stud it just even with the shock tower sheet metal. At that point, the brace will fit over the studs. Allow the wheel to come up slowly, putting the studs through the holes in the brace. As I recall, my G2 shock tower brace instructions explained that very clearly.

Figures, I have a UMI one. I read that in a post before from you Injuneer and did everything up to standing on the wheel. I forgot to do that part so that explains why it didn't work. Thanks, I might get back out again to try it tonight.

Any other ideas? I retracted the studs and it still won't fit. Even with them retracted, the STB will NOT sit flush with the shock tower sheet metal. I'm really starting to think it's a defective piece or something because it just won't go on no matter what I do.

Maybe UMI will be able to help you out, since its their product. Did you try to contact them? I am looking at buying one from them, but I'm not liking the problems your having.

Also you may just wanna try a BIG FN HAMMER Good luck, I hope I don't run into this problem when I buy mine.

I'm the one who made the post on DFB. I emailed them tonight. And I would take a hammer to it but...I might have to return it.
Camaronutt, don't worry about ordering from them. Everyone else I know who got them said theirs works fine. I think mine just may have come out of the manufacturing process wrong. They have excellent customer service though so I'm not too worried.

Re: URGENT: Anybody had a problem installing a STB?

You might want to measure the spacing between the holes and have someone with a similar brace compare it to theirs. Could be the brace is dimensionally incorrect, or could be that your shock towers have been damaged in an accident.
