Tuneup?

Took my car into to replace the clutch asked if they would call me if they think it's necessary to do a tune up as well. The car is at 133,xxx miles and so since the parts are original he said yes it is time for a tune up. But $750? I'm debating just trying to do it with my dad or at least some of it. Does 750 sound right?

If that includes the purchase/install of a new optispark then it sounds fine. But if thats for just plugs/wires its a little high. But anywhere you take these cars to get plugs/wires done is going to be outrageous. Anyone who has replaced plug wires through the stock looms knows how much of a bitch this is, mainly by the power steering pump. All the spark plugs can be a big pita to remove as well w/ stock manifolds. I'd say $750 isnt unusual considering its probably going to take 3-4 hours of work + parts. $150 in parts + 350 labor or so. Perhaps they are doing fuel filter, trans flush, oil change as well?

Basically if your going to own an LT1 you need to start doing your own work or your going to be poor real quick and very angry.

BIG difference between the 3.4 and the 5.7 LT1.

If $750 includes the clutch install, that's a fair price given the pain it is to do the work. However, it's wasted money in my opinion. There's no fun in owning an LT1 unless you can do the work yourself (atleast some of it... basic stuff). It's a rough job, but it's not hard. It's just time consuming and overly frustrating. You can do it yourself, just set aside a good block of time (took me 3 hours and the only other mechanic work I'd EVER done was plugs/wires on a 3.8... which took like 5 hours lol) You'll be alright, have faith.

I paid $650 for my tune-up, the very first day I drove it off the lot from a used car dealership. It paid for radiator flush with new cooolant and additives, engine flush and oil change with oil filter, MSD 8.5 wires with new spark plugs, tranny flush and new lubricant, all new belts and diagnostic check. People say I got ripped off but I was new to the car world how in the hell was I supposed to know?

Dont sound wrong to me I have changed my own plugs on 96 Trans Am and it was the biggest pain in the ***. I took it to the Dealer next time and it cost me 230 bucks just to replace the plugs :-/

BTW flushing your engine is generally a bad idea. All you do is dislodge any slude leading to clogs and high oil pressure.

do it yourself.
I read this thread twice and still dont know what they are including for 750. I would do :
plugs/wires
fuel filter
air filter
clean tb and MAF (spray cleaners, available at auto part store)
change all fluids, (oil, diff, trans, brake fluid, power steering, coolant)
o2 sensors
maybe a new cat( you can get a carsound off ebay for 60$)
and a pcm tune from pcm4less, madwolf, etc. ( this will help out a lot)

They are only going to replace the plugs and wires, and spray some throttle body approved spray cleaner in the thottle body. Then, they will call you up at home, and say you need a new this and that.$100.00 in parts.the rest labor.Might call some of your local Chevy dealers on this one. This is really a whole new science for someone who hasn't done this before. The frustratation will cause a lot of headaches.Remember, don't let the wires touch anything ,even themselves.My02.

The plug wires arn't too hard to do. You need to remove the alternator and loosen the power steering pump bolts for the passengers side.
