?trying to learn about heads?

ok im just simply trying to learn what everything means and what i need to watch and look for so i can choose a set of heads for my 1991 305.
heres starts the questions, what are the intake runners and should i look for bigger or smaller ones "171cc,175cc210cc"?
what does the chamber size mean, should i be going for a 64cc chamber or a 54 cc chamber "someone told me that if i put 350 heads on my 305 it would lose compression is that because of the chamber size"?
and what does 15-23 degree mean and what should i look for?
and what size intake and exhaust valve size should i be looking for?
and i dont understand a thing about cams either and im wanting to do a cam switch along with the heads. so the numbers and stuff i see on cams if yall know what those mean and what i should look for ide appreciate that too?

im sorry for so many questions, im trying to learn all this stuff so i dont have to ask anymore

but thkzz to all

Re: ?trying to learn about heads?

Intake runner size is exactly like it sounds. It is the size of the intake on the head. Typically the bigger, the more air it will flow.

The chamber size is where the piston comes up to the head, and where the valves close at. The bigger this number is, the less compression you have. Less compression can be good for supercharging or a turbo. More compression means more horsepower, but not a ton. There is such a thing as too much compression.

Stock valve sizes are fine as long as the cam is not a big step over stock. I don't know what they are stock on a 305.

The degrees refers to the angle of the head. LT1's are 23 degree heads. LS1's are 18 degree (i think). I don't know, but am pretty sure, that the smaller the degree the easier air can flow into the cylinders.

Like robvas said, port the stock heads. A 305 is not going to need a ton of air like a 383, or something, would.

If you want to get into cams that is a whole different story.

Re: ?trying to learn about heads?

what would be better, to get those heads with the head kit or to port and polish my stock ones?

If you polish them yourself then go that route, if you have someone else do it buy the heads instead. Just what I would do.

Re: ?trying to learn about heads?

Get the more expensive head kit. It comes with better springs with more lift. #HK194SM-2 on the list. I am pretty sure that is the cost for one head. Don't know though, never really looked at the 305 aftermarket.
