Tires rubbin'

Ok i just installed my 17" 10 spoke SS rims and tires. I have 275/40zr17's on the back and i noticed that when i take a hard corner fast or powerslide i can hear them rubbing and i looked and there is a small spot of bare metal in the wheel well. should i just pound that in a little so it wont rub or not?

Re: Tires rubbin'

I used a large sledge hammer to fit my 17x11 - 315/35/17's. I also had to remove the bump stops. Just bang the hell out of whatever rubs.

You might want to check your panhard rod for damage or worn bushings. 275's on a stock rim should not be rubbing on anything.

Re: Tires rubbin'

The panhard rod is a stamped steel bar, about 43" long that connects diagonally from a bracket on the drivers side of the axle to a bracket on the passenger side of the body. That's what keeps the body centered side-to-side over the rear axle. If the bar or the body bracket is damaged or bent, or if the rubber bushings at each end are worn out, the body can move closer to the tires in turns.

Its not going to hurt anything other than the sides of your tires to drive like that, but the handling is going to be erratic. Check to see if anything is damaged. May not be, but its really unusual for 275's on stock rims to rub at all in the back. I've run several different 275's in the back, and currently running 315's with no rubbing.

Its the lower black bar right in front of the axle tubes in this picture, although that's an aftermarket panhard bar, not the stocker.

Re: Tires rubbin'

ok nothing looks bent but the rubber bushings look weathercracked and kind of look like they are being squeezed out each side of the metal part. im going tomarrow to the Auto hobby shop on the base that im stationed at and im gonna have an alignment done. Im sure that the guys that are there can tell me whether or not the bar or bushings are bad. If so I guess im gonna hafta get an aftermarket one...o well.
