Third gens faster than the LT1?
Third gens faster than the LT1?
Hey all, my buddys brother has a third gen V8 camaro. I dont know anything about third gens or his car, but he claims that his camaro can own a 93-97 LT1 camaro. I always thought the third gens were slow in comparison to the LT1.
Is this guy full of it? Maybe someone could fill me in on the brief history of the third gen's engines and their ratings. What was the fastest third gen chevy made?

Re: Third gens faster than the LT1?
full.of.poopy.
The TPI's that came in 3rd gens pretty good engines, but as far as outrunning an LT1, no. Kinda like LT1 cars outrunning LS1 cars, it shouldn't happen if both cars are stock. Period.
Sounds like the guy is full of crap to me. Lots of people think/claim their cars are faster than they are, and those people are called liars or ricers.

Re: Third gens faster than the LT1?
A WS6 or an IROC had I believe 220 or 230 hp. NOt enough to beat your LT1, but you aren't gonna rape him either. If he's got work done to it, then he might give you a run. Ask him if he's stock.

Re: Third gens faster than the LT1?
I've owned 6 Camaros, all with the 5.7 motors.
3 3rd gen
3 4th gen
all my 3rd gens were A4.
two of my 4th gens have been M6.
In all honestly, I couldnt say which ones were faster judging with just my a$$ometer. They are really close, that is for sure. You'd have to go to a track to find out. One thing is for sure, the LT1 pulls harder at the top end. The TPI runs out of steam fast. It's not good for anything past 4500 RPM, and the LT1 will be strong for another 1000 rpm. I'm pretty sure the race would go to the LT1.

Re: Third gens faster than the LT1?
I sold my 88 IROC 350 to buy my 94 Z.
Stock to stock it was a nite and day difference. I could not believe how hard the LT1 pulled.
The LT1 was almost a full second quicker at the track.

Re: Third gens faster than the LT1?
the guys car is just a 305, so hes full of bs. Now im curious though.. are there stock 3rd gens out there that give the lt1 a run for its money? (other than the turboed V6 and the firehawk)
Re: Third gens faster than the LT1?
If it's a 305 (and it's stock), he's roadkill, unless it's a real factory freak.
Aside from the two cars already mentioned, Pontiac also made a number of Firebird Formulas with the 350. Given that the Formula is (often) supposed to be something of a "stripped-down" version of the T/A, and therefore lighter weight, I could see a 350 Formula running with (and quite possibly edging out) an LT1.
I suspect that a lot would depend on the drivers.
