Thinking of buying a 4th gen, looking for info.
Thinking of buying a 4th gen, looking for info.
In several months im planning to go buy myself an LT1 4th gen. Im planning to build it up as a fun weekend car for autox, drag strip, and general bad stuff
Im going to have somewhere around 5500 and that should get me one in ok condition w/ 6spd right?
I talked to a friend and who told me to stay away from a 93' because of the speed density. is this system horrible or is my friend over exagurating the problems?
He also told me to stay away from the 94' because of the unvented optispark...but does that matter with an Fbody that may need a new one anyways?
Does anyone run nitrous on higher mileage motors? Also my motor happens to blow.
how much should i expect to pay to have a shop pull the motor and rebuild it?(simple basic rebuild)
Any other info is greatly appreciated

Re: Thinking of buying a 4th gen, looking for info.
Well I got a 94 Z for $2200... So I'm damn sure you can find a M6 fbody within your budget
I wouldn't worry about the unvented optispark... Before me this was a one owner car, he kept all the records and stuff.
196k miles and the factory opti is still on there
I would try to avoid a 93 because every little engine upgrade will necessitate getting a computer tune as opposed to the MAF system that will make changes on it's own.
I'm probably going to be getting the engine rebuilt within the next year or so, and you can find LT1 shortblocks from some of this site's sponsors for under $3000, and if you want to try cheaper, look into Jasper crate engines, some others here have gone with theirs and are happy. I'm probably going to end up throwing a very mild 383 in there if money allows
Will you be more focused on autox or more on drag racing? If you want to do both you'll need to know the regulations of each class in autox. If you want to change the heads or cam(needed for big power), then you're automatically racing with world class multi-hundred-thousand-dollar road racers(ANYTHING goes!). If you just want to do fun runs then you should be fine. www.SCCA.org click around and find the rules for SOLOII for more info on what I'm talking about.
And the Camaro is the right car for all the other bad stuff

anyways, what does it require to tune it? prom burning like the 3rd gens, or is the kinda tuning that could be done with some sort of programmer that will allow me to do it myself?
hmm, well im in Ca, so if i have to eventually do a rebuild, it has to be smog legal...no 383 stroker
(this state sucks lol)as for what i am focusing on...uhm i dont know. It will be alot more drag racing then anything, but its not my favorite, im a handling man and will build the suspension for backroad fun more then anything.
when i do autox it will more then likely be fun runs just to have bragging rights over my buddies
also how common are verts between 93-95? Id really like a vert Fbodys.
and lastly, what kind of rollbars are available for them? ive been D/L'n some Fbody hideout videos and the "project speedy" has a nice looking one, but they dont have any threads that show all the mods

For handling you can make it extremely well by doing a simple shock/spring/swaybars and if the springs lower the car at all, then adjustable rear LCAs, adjustable panhard rod, and torque arm are advisable as well. Talk to Sam Strano from www.stranoparts.com , he is extremely helpful and is who will be helping supply me with goodies for solo II
I'm not sure of what all you can get away with in CA to upgrade engine performance, but I'd say midlength headers, full exhaust(with cats), CAI, 3.73 rear gears, stall converter, and a good pcm tune should net you low to mid 12s with the accompanying suspension parts and for drag racing--- drag radials.
I'm not sure how common the convertibles are, but if you're serious about getting as much performance as possible stay away from them. Added weight and more chassis flex =
As for roll cages here is what I found: http://www.fbodymotorsports.com/roll_bars_and_cages
Re: Thinking of buying a 4th gen, looking for info.
Check out the Supporing Vendor Index, you will find just about any type of part you need: engine performance/appearance/suspension/brakes/ ect. If you live in Cali. and are worried about their regulations, just make sure you get parts that have CARB stickers.
