basic physics....power is not created nor destroyed, only changed form.
there is a given amount of drag that is associated with generating electricity in the alternator. the alternator uses physical energy and converts it to electrical energy. by removing the demand for charge you eliminate this added drag. (lammens terms)
basically puts the alternator into freespin, the engine only has to spin the pulley and the internals...
probably worth 1-2hp
i would think it would take more than $5 to build it yourself. you need to figure out how to trigger it at WOT...a wot switch costs a little $$, not to mention a few bucks for the wire, connectors and relay.
i always thought of just rigging a switch to cut off the alternator...that's real cheap
