Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
I have a 93 z28 with a newly nuilt motor in her. During the whole motor swap something happened to my cooling fans whereas they do not function properly anymore. Regardless of the situation, my passenger side temp. coolant sensor in the passenger side head/block, I don't recall, is not currently hooked up. The actual sensor is installed but i cannot hook it up because the 2 wire harness is not connected because i do not know where the wires go. There is a black wire and yellow wire that come off the sensor harness but I dont know what wires they hook up to or need to get spliced to on the car harness. I tried All Data, which I like to call Some Data, I tried Chilton's, and I tried checking out another 93 Lt1. Apparently the coolant sensor in my situation is an optional sensor with 93 Lt1's with Vin code P.
Anyone have any idea what color wires this sensor gets hooked up to or what letters on the harness? Thanks.

Re: Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
The sensor for the ECM is in the water pump housing. Its a two wire sensor. The sensor for the gauge is in the drivers side head. Its a one wire sensor. I thought the 93's were the same as all the other years, so I don't know why there is a sensor on the pasenger side head. I've never heard of an "optional sensor".
Re: Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
Well he said the motor is newly rebuilt, so if they swapped heads it might be on the passenger side now. But if it has two wires, it is the wrong sensor. Like Injuneer said, the sensor for the ECM is in the water pump housing and it is a two wire sensor. If this sensor is not hooked up you will see a problem. But I thought the ECM has a fail safe and would keep the fans on all the time.
Re: Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
thanks for responding guys - actually - its a 383 motor but its still an LT1 - i have the single wire sensor in the driver side head which is for my temp gauge on the gauge cluster and i have the 2 wire sensor in the water pump for the ECM/PCM er whatnot - i ALSO have a sensor in the passenger side head which is the identical sensor as my water pump holds - when i researched i found that VIN code P has an optional sensor - and i recal having this same sensor even before the motor swap because i remember breaking the harness for it at one point - so im a little confused about the whole situation - i work at an auto repair shop and also go to automotive school so i have a decent grasp on sensors, cars etc. yet i cant figure this out and teh problem is that i had the car chipped so the fans turn on at 190* and 180* and currently my primary fan comes on at about 140* and doesnt shut off - causing the car to run really cool, giving me moderate heat and probably causing the car to run richer than it should.......

Re: Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
that sucks - yea i mean, maybe i neglected to say that i removed the AC from my car - wondering if any of those sensors have anything to do but i think they just monitor refrig. pressure and temp in order to function the ccot . anyways - i think i may just have to run a manual switch - or an individual switch for each fan - however that works - its just annoying because i shouldnt have to do that - the wires HAVE to be hooked up to something....
Re: Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
There is no sensor in the RH head for an f-body LT1 that I have ever seen or heard of (optional or otherwise). A VIN code P is a Camaro or it could mean LT1. It depends on what position it is in the VIN.
Re: Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
yea personally, i just thought VIN code P was LT1 or whatever the 5th digit means - i forgot exactly - anyways, i definaly have a sensor hole with a sensor in the block/head - i didnt look closely enough to see exactly where it is - boggles my mind cuz i looked at another 93 LT1 and a 95 LT1 and neither car had a sensor in the same spot as me....hows this for a hypathetical - is it possible that when they built the motor - they used two of the same head and just turned it around - as in saying they used 2 driver side heads? because the sensor i have on the passenger side now, looks like the same spot at the gague temp sensor on the driver side i have now, just as if you turned the head around - i wonder - i gotta research all data some more and see what the hell is goin on -

I have a temp sensor in the right side cylinder head, it's part of the Jet fan switch. If that's what you have there, the wires go to a plug that inserts in between a pair of connectors that is right out of the computer.

Re: Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
thats an excellent call - thank you - about 4 years ago before i even knew what an intake manifold was - i had some regular repair work done to the car and i had mentioned to the guy that i felt the car was running a bit warm - he got me a fan bypass, that yes, was a harness that inserted between my PCM harness with two wires that came off of it and ran to that sensor on the passenger side head - looking at schematics and whatnot i noticed the 2 wires that were attached to that fan bypass harness match up with the two wires in the PCM harness that control the primary and secondary fan.......so thank you - that makes enough sense to me to say that it what it is.....regardless of the sensor still being in the passenger side head, it is not currently hooked up - my primary fan still kicks on way early and doesnt shut off which there-in lies my problem.......now i had a chip flashed in accordance to my cam specs and whatnot and i had it programmed so my fans kick on at 180* and the other at 190*, which does not occur.
Could my fans be acting irrotic due to the fact that i no longer have AC hooked up in my car - and there were 2 sensors for the AC which are no longer hooked up - i only say maybe that could effect my fans because when i installed my EGR block off plates, the sensor for my EGR was no longer used and it threw a check engine light.....although, when i re-hooked up that sensor, though it had nothing to read anymore, the check engine went away - so im saying maybe the fact that i have 2 sensor for my AC that are not hooked up, the computer is reading an open loop or something causing my fan to come on and stay on.

Re: Temp. Coolant Sensor Issue
No...not having a/c and EGR will not affect fan performance. I do not have either and my fans work fine. How long has it been doing this? The entire time you have had the car or just recently? Maybe your programmer set the fans up wrong?
