tach problem

okay.....i bought a 95 z28 cluster off ebay. i installed it into my 93 z28. both cars were 6spd lt1's. my problem is that the tach only goes up to 3,000 rpm and anything over that the needle will go straight to zero. i have so far find out that my car was equipped with a tach filter and for some reason unknown that is keeping the new cluster from working properly. today i went out and took a volt meter to the wires i cut. the white ones get power and the black one is dead as a door ****.....maybe a ground? maybe it gets power from the white ones???? not sure. for now i have the old cluster in my car until i find something new out to try getting the 95 cluster to work. any suggestions are welcome.

Re: tach problem

I saw you got pounded pretty good on that other post. I'm willing to give this a shot (I know something about circuits). Do you have a Chilton's manual with wiring diagrams?

I know only the 93 has a tach filter. Since you are using a 95 gauge cluster, try removing the tach filter.

One of the posts from the previous thread told you to tie the two whites together, and you tied all 3 together instead, correct?

i tied the two white ones only. i dont know what the black wire does. i believe it is a ground and if it is i cant wire it up to the white ones because + and - doesnt mix together unless you want a fire.

actually, if yyou tied all 3 together, it wouldn't start to begin with

ok, lets try something new

can you still get at the wires at the rear of the cluster?

if so, run a wire from one of the white wires at the coil, all the way to the tach wire at the cluster(don't cut the wire at the coil, do cut the wire at the cluster)

if it still does the same thing, the new cluster is bad

The circuit diagrams I have aren't as good as I thought. They don't even show any difference between 93s and 94s. All I can tell for sure is that there's a white Tach wire running from the PCM into the Tach itself. Maybe one of the two white wires you cut to remove the filter is one of those? I'm not sure.

I would tend to agree that the black wire is likely a ground. If it were me, I would have tied the two white ones together, which effectively bypasses the filter completely. Since you already did that, and you tried Dave89IROC's suggestion - and it still doesn't work - I would probably assume the cluster is bad. I think it's pretty easy to (permanently) screw up under-dash wiring, so I personally wouldn't get too creative with further experiments at this point.

I've never messed with an instrument cluster. Is it possible to simply remove the tach from your 93 and put it into the 95 cluster?

Sorry, I have no better ideas here.
