Syncro or clutch problem?

Here is the deal:

My clutch pedal has a good 1-2" worth of play in it which I am chalking up to a broken clutch pedal return spring. Happened about 5 months ago and no problems that way.

When I am shifting into third (slowly and quickly), sometimes I get a horrible grinding noise and sometimes when Im driving it just pops right out of gear.

My clutch is starting to smell a little bit too.

What do you guys think? clutch or 3rd gear syncro?

How much do you think it will cost to get the syncro rebuilt if it is a syncro?

thanks for the help.

When my clutch was going bad, I woud be driing down the freeway in 4th and the clutch would slip then catch is I was giving the car gas, that lasted for about a week before the whols clutch went out, and I couldn't drive the car.

If that helps

I had a local transmission shop owner quote me anywhere from $500-$700 for replacing ALL the syncros. That price included $50 just to drop the transmission.

jawz, what was your clutch pedal like? Was it acting up? Could you feel anything else besides the sliping in and out?
