straight 30 vs 10w30?

I have an s10 i'm using as a daily driver and the bitch ticks out the *** when the motor's cold (it's a 4 banger) , but once it's warms up it's much better, the noise is just about completely gone. So i'm thinking about just running straight 30 so the oil wont be thinnner when cold. What do ya'll think about straight 30 and 40? Is it fine even in the winter? Just thought i'd ask for your opinions.

This is LT1/LT4 Engine Tech.... not the place for a generic question about an S10 stocker. Moving......

If you want poorer cold lubrication, run the single weight.

Maybe your ticking is an exhaust leak.

yeah thats what i was wondering about, cause even tho the thicker oil keeps the lifters quiet, it also has worse cold lubrication. I may just have to live with the noise cause i dont feel like changing the lifters. I've got enough stuff waiting to be done on the TA

Re: straight 30 vs 10w30?

If you intent is to get more flow when cold, you would be going the wrong way. A 10W30 has the same viscosity, or flow, as a 10W when cold and a
30W when hot. But a hot 30W is still alot "thinner" then a cold 10W. To get flow faster when cold you would have to go to a 5W30 or 0W40, which would decrease the cold viscosity.

Could it maybe be piston slap from being old and worn?
