Starter or ignition switch problems?

I got the car with a bad trans, swapped in a 6 speed. Anyways sometimes I had to turn the key 2-3 times for it to start. Well for the starter to go. Well I just put the exhaust on and it was fine, shut off and restart it, then the starter wouldn't stop once the car started. So disconnected the battery to stop it and now nothing. I bypassed the nuetral safety switch for now, so thats not the problem. Thanks for any help!

Try jumping it directly on the starter and see if it works.

I messed with it and I got it work 90% of the time. I really think its the switch because it I turn it harder or push a little further it usually works. I had the column out for the 6 speed swap and I think thw switch was loose, so I'll start there. It did the part where the starter stay on for a few seconds, but once and that was it. The car has also basically sat for 4+ months.

if u had the steering column down for the tranny swap i would definitely say check the positioning of the ignition switch...if its too far towards the firewall then the rod might not be making good enough contact to push the switch as far as it needs to be...drop the steering column again and readjust...i had the same problem when i dropped my steering column...my ignition switch and dimmer switch (right next to it) were adjusted too far towards firewall...and along with the starting problem, my high beams were non-functional bc the rod for the dimmer switch didnt extend far enough to activate that either...

Well today it was fine, after installing the air system back on the car. I ran it for a few mins and noticed the security light stayed on for a while they went out. Then shut it off and went to start and nothing again. At first the dash lights flashed when I hit the key, then they were ok. I'm leaning towards the switch or vats for sure now... but not sure which to mess with.

I messed with it more today and I hit the key and some blacl box in the center of the dash clicks. At some point someone took a wire from the starter relay output and ran it directly to the starter. It got melted on the exhaust. I have no power to the relay. I also checked and no power to the crank fuse even with the key turned. I fixed the wire to the starter from the relay, but no good. So I jumped the wire to the starter from the relay and fired up now problem.

So any idea on what to do to fix it correctly? I may just go pushbutton, but hate doing stuff they way and fear something could cause a fire. Wouldn't worry but sometimes I have my dog with me. So thanks for any input.

Once you get into somebody else's mods, there is not really a good way to help any further. My help comes from stock wiring schematics.
