Is This Stall Too Much?

I have my mods listed below. Is a 3500 stall still ok for the street? Or is that a little much.

the way you should look at it is like this... 3500 is a big number, yes. but it doesnt stall exactly at 3500. from what i hear, its more like 3200. and what if you mod your car more, and then end up needing a bigger stall just to get the most hp out of the future mods. i would go with the 3500.

It might be too much for an LT1? ( ) but for an LS1 which has a torque peak at 4400 RPM, then I'd say that a 3500 stall is probably ideal. A ~3000 stall probably wouldn't be enough?!

Re: Is This Stall Too Much?

All too often I see people putting too much stall.
You have to remember how you are going to launch it.

If you have a 3500 stall. Now keep in mind that this number is just a relative guess at best. It cant be exact because the stall would act differently on different motors.

Now if you flash a high stall car, your tires will most likely go up in smoke.
Also at this high of a stall, tires would be very needed for the amount of torque you will be putting down.

So get some tires first see if that suits ya, then go for the stall.. Streetable? 2800 should do you just fine. More than you think.

After looking at everything over time, I think people started putting large stalls on their cars after looking at track only cars that are running them and thinking thats what they should have on their mildly modded car.

Now I will do a breakdown of your mods as I see them:
1998 Z28 C5 18" wheels - too much wheel not enough tire... Remember for all those "looks" you are trading off rotating mass. A lighter wheel and tire will net more of your power to the ground.
ls1 motorsports lid - this is normal for a mod
Magniflow exhaust - Another common mod
coated pacesetter headers no cats and a y pipe - by this time you can now see that your torque has not really increase since you dont have tons of back pressure. I would reckon that with cats, you could gain some torque and not really sacrifice HP..
MSD wires - can this really be considered a mod?
Hypertech tuned - I think that this may hurt your car more than help. Generally Hypertech may work on a stock car. Not common for their tuning to work on a modded car. This is assuming you have a programmer and didnt actually have Hypertech manually dyno tune your car.
160 stat - Again, is this a mod?
Dynoed 312rwhp befor the headers and hypertech - so lid and exhaust net ya 312. what was your rwtq?

332hp and 344ft lbs after the headers and y pipe

Most of what I say is often disregarded as blasphemy. I dont my LS1. I modded my LT1. I learned alot from my friends (they campaigned 9 sec cars across the country), I own a restaurant and watch people every weekend show up with cars of all types that still run lackluster.

The #1 mod you could ever do to your car is learn to drive it better. Once you have that down, then do a mod. Then learn to drive again.

On a auto tranny car, I would go for gear. Mild street gear at that. 3.73's. That is good. That will get you down the 1/4mile quicker. If thats your point/goal.

Re: Is This Stall Too Much?

3000 stall with 2.0-2.2 STR is perfect for a daily driver that has little or no track time. 3500 stall with 2.3-2.6 STR is perfect for a daily driver that sees more then a few track days but still needs to have some street manners. 3800-4000 stall in the 2.7 STR range is perfect for mostly track driven cars that have slicks and see minimal street driving (although many do have these as daily drivers but it's too loose for my taste).

If you ever do head/cam upgrades then the 4200+ stalls become more appealing for track and 3800-4000 become better for daily driving. But on stock internals I would stick with a 3000-3600 stall depending on how much track time you put in. But a stall is the best mod for any A4 LS1 hands down. It'll get rid of your dead spots, knock .4-.7 off your ET and make the car way more fun to drive. Forget gears if you have 3.23's and just get a torque converter. If you got 2.73's then I'd reccomend 3.42's to maintain some street/hwy manners and compliment the 3000-3500 stall TC. Don't forget a tranny cooler is a must and a shift kit is a nice bonus to add as well.

Good Luck

I dont use the 18"s at the track. I have a set of M/T and some skinnies for the front. I also have a cutout that i open at the track
