Speedometer question ...

Here's another unintelligent question, when I'm on the freeway going about 60 MPH my speedometer goes crazy the needle jumps up to like 80mph mark then back to 60mph, and it does it repeatly every time I reach 60 or mph.

One of my friends said it could be the " speedsensor" does this sound about right ??

Well here's a REALLY unintelligent response: On older cars when the speedometer cable would need lube,it would make the needle jump around. I have the feeling yours is electronic, not mechanical, so maybe a loose connection causing and intermittant signal, or maybe your friend is right.

Great then I'll check for any loose connections if not maybe I'll just p/u a speedsensor & see what happens.

Re: Speedometer question ...

I know it sounds like it would be unrelated, but i'm pretty sure its an ignition switch problem. My car did the same thing when i had a bad connection on the ignition switch. I replaced the switch and fixed the connection and no more problems.

Re: Speedometer question ...

Well that kind of makes sense, I just had the distributor replaced on it by a sloppy mechanic that doesn't know what he's doing. So it's very possible that he messed something up, I'll check on that ignition switch, thanks.

Re: Speedometer question ...

Symtoms:
Erradic Gauges while driving (Speedo Jumping 40mph up, then all the way to zero, randomly)
intermittent power loss to dash (gauges die, etc. Car would stop responding, seemed to be idling.)
Smell of burning plastic
When key is turned to on, everything lights up, etc.. but when you turn to run the power seems to shut off. (CD Player, dome lights, etc stay on)

I found that in another post.

The ignition switch can be had for about $10 at the local parts store. Here is a link to how to replace it. http://shbox.com/ignsw/ign_switch_repl.html
The plug in on mine was starting to get burnt too. The switches can get pretty bad sometimes.
