Should I worry? (LT1 vs. G8)
Should I worry? (LT1 vs. G8)
I have a 97 Camaro and I just looked at:
http://www.thetorquereport.com/2008/...rive_live.html
And the G8 which finally will be out has 361 HP and 385 torque. If some dude pulls up to my camaro should I race or should I not so I don't look stupid that a family sedan might beat me with his shopping bags in the bact seat. The car looks like a Saab and a volkswagon. But how can GM put all the power in those skinny tires from that picture. Plus does the G8 weigh more then a F-body?
Need to start some bolt ons soon, lol.

Stock for stock it would be a very close race. If the Camaro has any mods at all I would have to give the nod to the Camaro unless it's really out of tune or something.
However, the G8s are going to respond very very well to bolt ons and computer tuning, so watch out...

Well, a stock 97 has about 285, so do the math. On the other hand, the Lt1 has low-end TQ and is lighter. The G8 is auto which puts gives it an advantage as far as hooking up, whereas even with the low-end Torque of the Lt1, the 97 may spend some of the low-end in the same spot--if manual.
So I guess its up in the air as to how they would perform side by side.
Even, if the G8 is heavier, with a 75 hp advantage and auto, the Lt1 might have a problem. JMHO

hey its 11 year newer technology they should be making more HP by now. well have to actually see them when they are sold and on the street. The GTO's were pretty hyped up when they were being introduced and look at those things most guys with the 5.7 goats can barley cut low 14s at the track.

Does a stock LT1 have torque like this? 385 lb-ft @ 4,400 RPM
I know the G8 comes with the L76 instead of the LS2, but if you have any doubt what a heavy ride can do backed by a heathly 6.0L take a look at Trailblazer SS's. Low 14s, high 13's out of a stock 2 ton vehicle isn't bad.
What kills most of these heavy GM A4 rides is GM programming in so much torque management. Now take these heavy rides and give them a tune and no other mod and they're well in the 13's.
Want more of a car based platform, look at the Goat. As mentioned before the LS1 based weren't too great athough not getting out of the 14's I'd have to disagree with, but the LS2 was a good performer.
The other domestic 4 door V8 cars you should worry about are the SRT8's (Charger, 300C, Gand Cherokee).
If you're in the low 14s - high 13's range there are even several 6 and 4 cyl rides you need to worry about too.
Now if this kind of thing bothers you, it is time to mod.
