Here's the situation. I last changed my oil in mid December. Since then I've only driven the car a few times till mid Feb. After that I took off insurance and the car sat most of the time in the garage, only being driven about 2 -3 time around the block since. Now I'm thinking of putting insurance back on it for the summer time and since school will be over. Thing is, the car didn't see anywhere near 3000 miles ( I think I put 700 on it since mid decemeber) since the oil change, so would I be alright going another month or so with this same oil and filter? Or should I change it all out since it's just been sitting most of the time. I use Mobil 1 Syth. as well.
Re: Should I change my oil???
I don't have a technical answer for you, but if you change your own oil, it wouldn't hurt to do it. Wouldn't you rather change it and not need to, than need to and not change it? My Z28 sat for about a year and I haven't had any prodlems with it. Bottom line....summer's comin up and you don't want to take any chances. Oil changes are cheap enough, I say go for it!

I wouldn't have a problem waiting another month.

Yeah, I was thinkin of doing it this week before the weekend, so I could have it insured and ready to go. I guess I'll just play it better and change it. I wanna take it to the track in a few weeks too, so I guess it'll be best for the car.Originally Posted by Satin

I would change the oil but leave the filter. One of the main things that breaks down oil is the acids and other things in the blow-by that gets past the rings. It also attacks the internals of the engine. This is the reason most mechanics say to change the oil every 3k or 3 months.

Unless those 2-3 trips were at the track, WOT, or very short distances, I don't think the oil would be affected much.
700 miles isn't much to break down the oil unless you have major mechanical flaws.

OK, so what I've finally decided to do is get some insurance for it this weekend. I'll have to drive it as is this weekend though, but it should be on for the 1 day I think. During the week I'll change the oil and filter. I really do want some fresh oil in there for the track. Don't like to take any chances then.

change it..what the otehr guy said 3k or 3 months..and since your already in there changing it you might as well just do the filter to
