shifter removal

Re: shifter removal
If you pull the shifter back to 1st, look on the front of the shifter ****, and you should see a "staple" sticking into the ****. If you pull that staple, the shifter **** will pop right off. Usually you can get behind them with a small straight screwdriver.
.....hey, I even found you a picture!!! (I'm pretty sure the '86 will be the same idea)

I dont think those are there on the z28's or iroc's, not sure what you have, but what capn posted was a picture of a **** off of an rs, i believe the ball on the z28 and iroc's are more ball shaped and should just screw off

Re: shifter removal
Automatic ***** never screw off??
I just had another thought though ..... the factory shifter in my old '81 Z28 was a little different. To remove it, you have to pop off just the "button", and then down inside the top of the handle (underneath where the button was) there's a snap ring that you need to get out. Obviously snap ring pliers would be the best, but you can usually use a straight screwdriver to get one side started and pop the thing out. Then the **** will pop off.
I don't know which style was used in 3rd-gens?? I'm sure one of the 2 methods will work.
BTW, that shifter **** pictured above is out of a 4th-gen LT1/LS1 car.
