Shifter Problem???

I noticed my shifter is able to twist left and right. I'm not sure if it's just loose or if it's supposed to be able to do this or what. I also noticed that the shifter is able to be pulled up about one or two inches. Is this normal? If not, what do I do to fix it? It's on my 97 five-speed Camaro. Thanks for any input.

Re: Shifter Problem???

Sounds to me like the stick broke loose from the rubber isolator in the shifter. Got to either upgrade with a new shifter, head to the junk-yard and get a replacement; or see if u can find a replacement shaft w/o the isolator on ebay.

Re: Shifter Problem???

Well the shifter has been like this pretty much the whole time I owned the car (about a year). Could it still shift and be broken at the same time?

Re: Shifter Problem???

When I went to replace my stock stick I noticed that I was missing a bolt on the T56. It shifted fine, just had some play.

I'm Not exactly sure how to get the center console apart on that model. But it should just lift off. If it doesn't, don't force it. Try to pull the shifter boot over to once side to see how it is held in there. Once you get the shift boot off, you're more than half way there. It's self explanitory after that.
