Sensor on the rear differential housing

I looked under my car today and found a sensor located on the top of the differential housing that is not connected. There doesnt appear to be a wire or plug anywhere near to plug into it... What is that sensor and may it be disconnected for any specific reason??

Thanks guys... I learn something new every day.. lol

That's the rear wheel speed sensor for the ABS system. Is your ABS INOP lamp on?

Re: Sensor on the rear differential housing

If your car has ASR, it wouldn't have the sensor on top of the diff housing. It would have two sensors, one on the backing plate on each end of the axle housing, and small reluctor gears on the end of each axle behind the backing plate.

Sounds like someone may have swapped in a complete rear axle assembly from an ABS-only vehicle.

Does your Service Parts label show RPO code "NW9” for the ASR (traction control) option? Is there one (ABS-only) or two (ABS+ASR) rear brake lines.

Re: Sensor on the rear differential housing

That makes sense because he must have the ABS/ASR(TCS) controller for the ASR-Off lamp to be on.

Re: Sensor on the rear differential housing

I do need to clarify my first post.. ABS/INOP light is on and ASR/OFF light is on.. the ASR/OFF light is not affected by pressing the ASR button on the lower center dash..

Re: Sensor on the rear differential housing

The fact that there may be no wheel speed sensors on the backing plates would explain why the ASR/OFF light is on. Sets a code in the electronic braking/traction-control module (EBTCM), module shuts off ABS and ASR because it can't work without the rear wheel speed sensors, turns on those lights. So it's not going to permit input from the ASR button.

You have to check what rear axle assembly is in the car. Does it have sensors on the brake backing plates? Look to see if there are unused harness/connectors hanging loose back there.

Off topic.... but my MoTeC M48Pro was installed and tuned by Second Street Speed in Perkasie, PA, way back in 2000.
