security light

My security light came on while I was driving and stayed on for about 10 minutes. The manual said something like it could be a dirty key. Is this something I need to get serviced soon if it comes back on?

get it scanned, it could be any one of a number of sensors that went out of wack. Doesnt mean something failed, could of just been a weird reading. But get it scanned anyway to see what it was

I own a 94 Z and had that prob but mine would stay on all the time. I just had my ignition replaced because one of the two wires in it that tell the pcm that the car is trying to be stolen was starting to come apart. If it would have broke completely, i would have been walking. Not that expensive to fix. Under 200$.

Yes it COULD be a dirty resistor pellet in the key (clean with a pencil eraser or very fine scotch brite). The key needs to be clean & DRY to work properly...however, when my security light came on it was due to the same issue digitalz13 experienced, except I was walking (300 mi from home too).
The light guage wires from the lock cylinder (that read the key resistor) work harden after about 100k mi & it could be 1 of them is starting to break. Mine had been hanging by a single wire strand for a while which caused hi resiatance & tripped the light intermittantly. It finally broke & the light stayed on after that. If that light comes on & stays on when the ignition is off, game over, car wont restart. If you're driving & it comes on solid, DO NOT shut the car off until you're where you want the car to be when you fix it.
It is also possible to bypass VATS (the security system) by measuring your key resistor value, getting a like value (+/- <10%) resistor(s) & jumping the two light duty wires from the lock cylinder at the steering column base. I carry a resistor as a get home fix now.
cheers,
Ian

Normally, if the security lamp comes on while you are driving, it will continue to start later (you won't have any Passkey protection, though). If it remains on before you start the car, the car won't start.
