seat mod?

I pulled my factory seats out to clean the carpet, and I noticed they must weigh over 50 lbs. They are power but they don't work. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to lighten them. Is it worth it, maybe strip the electronics or something.

Re: seat mod?

You can buy a manual seat track and bolt it to your existing seat to it, if thats what you were asking... I dont think you can just take out the electronics and have the track go back together??

Thats no problem to add brackets for the rack. But I wondering how light you can get the factory seats. These things are really heavy.

What model car? Firebird or Camaro? (Adding a "signature" with basic info about your car helps people answer your questions). My Formula cloth, manual seats were about 36# each. If yours are really 50#, look around for other seats from 4th Gens.

And, since this isn't "engine" related, I'll move it to "General F-Body Tech...." rather than here at "LT1/LT4 Engine Tech".

Not to jack a thread... But I was thinking aout doing seats.. Just don't have a problem w/ the stockers.

I like the bucket seats.. Sink INTO them.... Can I/anyone modify the track to get it to sit "bucketed" like that??

Re: seat mod?

I've had my seats out and I'm thinking the six way driver side is really closer to 25 - 30 lbs but I didn't weigh it. Personally I don't think the rack and motor are more than 3 lbs. The motor surely isn't even a pound as it fits in the palm of my hand. The steel mounting rails will have to stay imho so you aren't going to lose much. What I'm musing over is the bulk of the seat weight is actually the seat itself above the mounting, mechanical rack and power switch. The power mechanism is probably 10%. If weight reduction is your priority then I think you're on the right track. Racing seats are something to consider as well as carpet padding removal. But that's getting pretty hardcore.

Re: seat mod?

I think the power seat brackets way around ten or so pounds. You will shed some weight by switching to the manual brackets if that is what you consider worth doing. Otherwise, you could by aftermarket racing seats as already mentioned, or you can just pop out the passenger seat at the track.
