Rpm Trouble

Whats up guys I have just upgraded my dash to a 97-02. So I had to change the cluster out. I got the diagram to the wiring to interchange from a 93 to a 97 cluster. Before I changed my dash my rpm gauge goes up and down fast with no control? If I push the gas the needle drops if I let off the gas it goes to the top? I thought that I may of had a bad cluster but do to my new cluster being installed it is doing the same thing. Could this be a short or maybe a bad ground? Also my oil gauge acts funny it does not move like should. When the car starts up it goes to half way and stays. If anyone has any ideas please help.

Re: Rpm Trouble

The 93 had some sort of filter in the tach circuit, possibly??? Seem to recall reading that.

Re: Rpm Trouble

yup, you need to remove the tach filter, I believe it is taped in the harness near the coil

Re: Rpm Trouble

Sorry guys I did not mention that I did the filter . My friend told me about it, thinking that the filter was my problem. So we read a few posts on how to do it and fixed it. So far I can take a strong guess that it is not the filter or the cluster. Could this problem be coming from the computer? I guess I am back to the drawing board.

Re: Rpm Trouble

Cain, did you ever get this issue fixed??? I presume you were using a 97 cluster in your car?? I just ran into the same issue on one of my 93's after my MSD took a crap. I removed it and bypassed the tach filter, but still don't get a good signal to the tach in the 97 cluster that's in the car. I think I'm going to have to find the resistance in the filter that I removed, and use that as a starting point and start wiring in resistors until I find the right combination, but wanted to see if you had fixed it first.
