Replacing Ignition Switch without "VATS"

I need to replace the ignition switch. Can I replace with a new switch that comes with it's own set of keys??? Will the car run without using a "VATS" key system???

I believe you have to have the correct resister put in the key/s. When I had a spare key made the dealer fixed it. Not cheap!
