Replaced Fuel Filter, Broke the Retainer...

Ooooops...

There's a Silver Ring Retainer that the Fuel Filter slides into... Well when I was struggling to get the old filter off through leaking fuel I got a bit impatient and accidently snapped the Retainer off onto the ground... It looks as if it's still in one piece however is this retainer really nessicary? I have tugged on the lines and the fuel filter doesn't really budge at all however that MIGHT change under fuel pressure... Should I replace this Retainer? and if so... How?

I'd want it on there. Pep Boys sells little repair kits for that purpose that splices into the factory line.

You sure it's busted, it just clips in the hole? It was a pain to install the filter with the retainer. Briefly considered leaving it off, filter has enough support looks like. But figured if factory put it in there, must be for a reason...

The weight of a full filter is going to vibrate as you drive. IMO, having the clamp on there is important to keep the lines from fatiguing from flex, as well as keeping any rattling at bay.

I kind of forget what it looks like down there but could you not use a large hose clamp as the retainer????

A large hose clamp isnt a bad idea and would likely make it easier to install and remove the filter.
