Replace the turn signal switch ?

Has anyone attempted to replace the turn signal switch ?

My 94 has a bad high beam switch and i'm stuck on high. I disconnected the high beams as a temp fix, but want my low beams and fogs lights back on. I know I have to cut all power to air bags for a while, but was a little hessitant about tearing it down to get at the switch. Anyone fixed one before ? any thoughts or warnings

There is no point in replacing the turn signal switch because that does not engage the high beams. You need to get the column cover apart and you will see a piece of plastic with a contoured portion that presses up against a metal rod going down the column. When you pull back on the stalk, this gets pressed and it shoves the rod down to engage or disengage the high beams. You do not need to take the wheel off to do this. Sometime the plastic piece can break of actually fall out. Mine fell out when I had the column apart replacing the turn signal switch so I got a good education on how it needed to be oriented.

Quick fix would be to pull off the column covers right behind the steering wheel and pushing down on that lever to disengage the highs.

Good luck.

The high beam switch is down lower on the col.

You should be able to reach it and push the button/rod

High beam switch is down below the upper column mount bracket next to the ignition switch. Both are controlled by rods that go up into the column.

I'm gonna post a new thread but I saw this one hoping it wasn't "dead". My problem is I have to replace my 1986 Camaro's (no tilt) turn signal switch. I have everything off except a black plastic cover which covers the inside of the column and the old switch. How do you get this cover off? Is it the horn button? Can I pry it off without breaking anything vital? It appears to be attached at the center by the column spline but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe you should have started a new thread, seeing as the original was about a 1994 and yours could be very different.

Is it the steering lock? cicle with notches all around the outside? same col. as a 4th gen. for the most part.

It has a snap ring in the center...you need a steering lock depresser. You can rent one at auto parts store....presses the lock ring down then take the clip off. put it back just like you took it off.

That's it mdaction! I appreciate the fast response. I was trying to pry it off with a screwdriver earlier until I let my experience w/ inexperience temper my assault on that lock plate (now I know what it's called too). Thanks

Ahhh!!! Who need a special too for that. Just push down on the plate and remove the clip. Actually, I dont suggest that because it is a pain. So go rent the tool. It is a lot easier to get it off then it is to put it back on. trust me I did 2 columns in 1 day without the tool because the snap on guy didnt have a replacement on the truck when I broke mine using it for another purpose then it was intended for.
