Removing panel under the glovebox and firewall?

Wondering how to take off the panel under the glovebox on a 97 camaro?

Also, what does the foam padded plastic do that is near the firewall/pedals? I assume it is heat/noise reduction and I am wondering if I can remove it an put a sound deadener (like dynamat) in its place? Would this better keep heat out of the interior or would it melt?

Been a while though so don't take this as gospel.....

If I remember correctly there are a few screws you remove after opening the Glove Box, then you can access the rest of the screws underneath and the whole panel slides out an drops down.

Also found this on Brent's Website:
Alarm Install

He details pretty much how to remove the Panels.
