Recommend cheap temp/tach guagues???
Recommend cheap temp/tach guagues???
Well....seeing as the dash temp guage is useless and I do not want to drive around with my scanner on I would like to take the cheapest possible route to put some accurate electric guagues in one of those ~$30 pillar pod things. I have seen small tachs and water temp guagues at summit, would I just need the kit and tap into the respective electric line and that is it? Anyone know of a total kit and/or a how to on these? I can do it myself easily I just have no idea where to begin or where to get the reading for the guages from. Thanks for any help.
Re: Recommend cheap temp/tach guagues???
since you have a TA i would try putting one in one of the air vents. it think the 2 1/16" guage fits...not possitive.
and most temp guages have their own sensor that you put in the coolant system someplace, basically a T fitting i think.

Re: Recommend cheap temp/tach guagues???
Autogage makes good guages for the money. i wouldnt be going to pep boys to buy some guages that arent name brand.
a tach just needs 12V,ground,power for the back light, and a wire that goes to the coil/tach wire in the ignition.
if u use an electrical temp guage,im sure it just splices into the coolant temp. sensor wire for the signal, then power,ground,12V source, and power for the illumination just like the tach.

Re: Recommend cheap temp/tach guagues???
No.... you can not splice a second gauge wire onto the stock coolant tmep sensor. It's a resistance circuit, and running the gauges in parallel throws off the resistance of the circuit, producing incorrect temperature readings. You need a seperate sensor for the new gauge. Try the plugged hole in the passenger side head between #6 and #8 plug.
The Firebird/Formula/TA dash A/C vent holes fit 2-5/8" gauges. Its hard to believe you could get any more accuracy out of a 2-1/16" or 2-5/8" tach than you would out of the factory unit. That would be way too small.

Re: Recommend cheap temp/tach guagues???
I decided on the water temp and oil temp gauges since both are plugged and available to use. Do I have to drain the coolant to install the water temp gauge, (I assume so but hopefully not lol )? The oil one is easy.
Oh and one more thing, is it even possible to buy one of those cheapo Autozone fuel pressure guages that hooks directly to the schrader valve and make a temporary mount so that I can hook it up to see through the windshield while doing WOT runs?
Thanks again for all the help
