I got mine recharged for $83 a couple of years ago. That assumes that none of the other parts went bad from the system being open to humidity for any length of time.

Crap... my stuff has been sitting in the garage open to the elements for 2 years now. I wonder what needs to be replaced and how would they check for it?

replace the accumulator(don't install until you are going to get it charged), everything else should be ok, make sure the system is vacuumed down for at least 30 minutes

i drained my air about 4 months ago when doing my head/cam swap. should i be alright if i just go to a shop to have it filled? or does damage come that quickly from being empty?

Why are you dumping the AC to do a cam swap? take the condesner and use a bungee strap to hold it up out of the way but don't unplug any lines... You should have just enough room to slide the cam in that way.

i know now. it's my first head/cam swap and i read somewhere to disconnect the air lines and condensor attached to the radiator. just learning as i go along. with being disconnected not too long, does damage happen that fast?

If you open up the system (even for just a short time), the correct procedure is to draw down a vacuum before recharging. If it sits open for a while, you may want to get a new accumulator with a fresh dessicant.
