Recently bought a mutt. Have some problems/questions

Hey everyone, this is my first post on this forum and also concerning this vehicle. Its a 95 z28 and as it sits neither water temp or oil pressure register to the gauge cluster. The kicker is the motor residing in the camaro has iron heads and the coolant sensor is on the passenger side between the # 6 and 8 spark plugs. Also the oil filter for a z28 doesn't work. So now I find out that I got a caprice motor in the camaro. My concerns are as I've attempted to locate any wiring or evidence of wiring for the connectors to the oil pressure or water temp senders. I suspect my wire harness will have the water temp wiring on the drivers side but I can not locate it. Same thing for the oil pressure sensor, I can put my hand on it but can't find the wiring. I'd like to see pics with some specifics as shoe boxes site has not been able to get me out of this pickle. Also the previous owner says it has a cam, and the valve covers are painted purple so there's a chance its true but is there any visual way to determine if they're stock or not? Thanks

mods that I've confirmed:
Hurst shifter
crappy headers- thin flange and mild steel construction
high flow cat
slp loud mouth muffler and cat back exhaust
aluminum intake elbow
k and n filter
4.10 gears and spool
lowering springs
corvette wheels
stage 3 clutch

mods that I'm not sure of:
jet pcm tune- almost 100% sure that its not there
cam
bigger throttle body
subframe connectors

to cut the fat off my first post:

Is there a visual way to determine if the cams are aftermarket?
Assuming the previous owner snipped the wires for the oil pressure sensor and coolant temp sensor, where do the wires join the harness in respect to the enginebay as a point to start my search for them?

The iron heads aren't terrible. They are pretty durable, having been able to survive police service. And the actually flowed more CFM's, stock for stock. Produced great torque numbers on the LT1's that were used in the B-bodys, Caprice and Roadmasters. Not sure if GM actually moved the sensors on the block in the different platforms, I would be surprised if they did.

The heads are identical on the driver's side and passenger side. Someone may have flipped them, resulting in the coolant temp sensor being on the passenger side between #6 and #8, rather than on the driver's side between #1 and #3. Pull the pipe plug out of the head on the driver's side, and swap the sensor and the plug side-to-side.

Your engine only has one "cam", not "cams".

thanks shoebox, I never saw that pic. Injuneer, the fact that the heads are iron means it was from a b or d body though, right? The PO is trying to tell me that not all 95's had aluminum heads.

assuming a couple bolt-ons with a tune, are the iron heads with a smaller cam gonna be at an appreciable power difference than aluminum?

All the F-Body an Y-Body engines left the factory with aluminum heads. As far as I am aware, none of the other LT1 applications used aluminum heads.

B-body or D-body, the Fleetwood Caddy had the Lt1 in '94-'96. The iron heads had a lot of development, and worked great at normal street flow rates, couldn't dissipate heat as well as the aluminum ones. Little more weight, but not terrible, either.

Makes you wonder what else has been modded on the car.

wild *****, where abouts in upstate New York are you? I'm in the Ballston Spa area.
As far as the oil pressure sensor goes, I'm unable to locate it with shoe boxes diagram as he has an automatic and I'm manual. What I have is a lot of wires that head toward the transmission tunnel and I think that's where I need to look for it but I'm unable to determine what color the wires are for it. I found the dark green wire for the coolant temp sensor, just need to buy a connector and than put the other wire to a ground right?

The o/p sensor is in the same place for auto or manual on a 1995. It has one tan wire.

shoebox you are the man. One thing I read on your site was that if you short 5 and 6 on the DLC it will put the car in field service enable mode and if the fans turn on that means the PCM has the ability to operate the fans. Here's what scares me, the PO ran a wire where the relays are from the fog lights to fan #1. Basically with the key on and foglight on, the fan runs. So does the fact that the fans turned on when shorting the DLC mean that the fan relays work 100%?

Re: Recently bought a mutt. Have some problems/questions

If the fans work with the DLC shorted, then the PCM is running them and wiring and relays are ok. I'd get that other wiring off of there.

Re: Recently bought a mutt. Have some problems/questions

does the oil pressure sensor and more importantly connector ( I'm missing the connector) appear on other GM vehicles that would be more readily available at a junk yard?

Re: Recently bought a mutt. Have some problems/questions

got the 2 connectors from the junkyard off of a roadmaster. The temp sensor I bought from advanced auto is made by BWD and fits the sensor connector off of the roadmaster. The sensor and connector for the water pump are both slightly smaller. Also the one from the junkyard only has one wire going to it vice the one for the water pump which has two, is there something wrong here? Also the oil pressure connector has 3 wires to it and from what I saw only 1 wire, a tan one, goes to the sensor. The connector has a tan wire and I believe orange and black too, do I just connect the tan wire only?
