Rear Lights inop on 87 IROC

I have a problem on my 87 IROC-Z that I can't figure out. the tail lights will not work. nor will the license plate lights. changed the bulbs, still nothing. I know there's a short somewhere in there because when i put in a new fuse it immediately blew as soon as i attempted to turn on the lights. Anyone had this happen to them? and if so where would you recommend the first place to look be? It's really annoying cause if I want to drive it it has to be in the middle of the day. can't drive it at night at all so i can't take it anywhere if there's a chance i won't make it back before sunset. Also can't drive it if there's a chance of rain as TN state law requires you turn your lights on if it's raining. So if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be really appreciated

I'd start at the light sockets and then trace the wire forward from there.

I got the problem fixed. it was actually with the radio. turns out theres a wire that is actually dark dark brown and looks like a ground wire. so that's what i hooked up when i put my new radio in a couple months back. someone mentioned it on thirdgen.org and i looked and sure enough that was the case. Had to take the T-Tops off and get direct sunlight on it to see the difference but it's there. so anyone whose lights goes out if you put a new radio in better go back and check what you used for the ground.
