Rear Crash Bar

I took off my damaged bumper cover today and I was also able to get the impact absorber off but I don't know what to do to get the actual crash bar off. If you have done this or know how to do it please let me know because I'm not sure how it comes off. In case I'm not clear on my request, it is the metal part behind the rubber absorber when you are looking at the car from the back. Thanks

Re: Rear Crash Bar

Nevermind, I finally got it off. For those of you interested, there are 4 bolts above each exhaust pipe that connect the crash bar to the car. I HIGHLY recommend using deep sockets because a normal 13mm wrench is a SUPER pain in the ***. It took me like 3 hours to get the bolts out.

Re: Rear Crash Bar

3 hours for 4 bolts, I'd be punching walls in frustration. glad you got it off though.

Re: Rear Crash Bar

Frustration is an understatement for how irritated I was. Whenever you can barely get the wrench to go on the bolt in the first place and then you can only turn it like 1/8 of a turn at the most if you're lucky, postal is more descriptive for how I felt, lol.

Re: Rear Crash Bar

So now if you get hit in the rear you are going to do an imitation of a 1970's Ford Pinto? http://itrs.scu.edu/mcalkins/spring99/09/virtuecon.htm

Re: Rear Crash Bar

That's the plan, lol.

EDIT: Damn, it would take one hell of an impact to rupture the gas tank in a 4th gen Camaro, don't you think? I know the Pintos were exploding but their gas tanks were behind the axle, not in front and above it. Please correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the gas tanks in our cars right behind the back seats, in front of the t-top storage?

Re: Rear Crash Bar

Yea, but in 2004 there are a lot of very large SUV's on the road and with no brace it wouldn't take much for a 5000 Navigator to enter the passenger compartment with a good rear hit...

Re: Rear Crash Bar

Ouch. I'm hurting just thinking about that. Even if the tank didn't go I bet i'd still be in pretty bad shape. Look on the bright side, at least one of those SUVs would be high enough to strike above the gas tank probably. Then I'd just be digging glass out of my back and neck for the next month, lol.
