Is the ram air on the 1998-2002 SS functional?

Hey guys, is the ram air hood on the 98-02 SS functional? The engine looks identical to my 2000, the air intake looks the same as mine. It looks like the hood scoop leads to nothing.

But, But.........

I heard from someone who heard from someone else who heard from someone who did a test that it only really works above 500mph?

Anyone who doesn't have a SS will tell you it doesn't work or it heats up the air. Truth is it does work and doesn't heat up the air. Period

If by functional you mean "draws air" - then yes.

If you mean it actually "rams air" inside the engine - then no.

its a matter of opinion until someone throws up numbers to back up what they say.

Nah, we don't need that.....

I'm right - and if you disagree - you are wrong.

Everyone got it? Seems easy enough to understand.

This coming from someone who owns an SS
I wouldn't Think it heats the air up on an LS1, but an LT1 yes, there is potential for it to heat the air up on that motor (The airbox sits on the Intake Mainfold.) As far as a gain in power? I haven't seen any data that has convinced me that the SS is any more powerful than a Z28, T/A, Formula (etc). The SS package is an appearance thing more or less to me. Yeah the bigger wheels are a bonus, but, the hood and spoiler are for purely for looks.
Ram Air is a gimmick used to move cars from the lots, not something you'll see/feel in the real world. Until I see some hard data proving otherwise, thats my story and I am sticking to it

Re: Is the ram air on the 1998-2002 SS functional?

OKay, although those articles were good reading, that didn't answer the question...

Another thing, sounds like someone sent over a ringer LT1 SS to them:
SS: 1/4-Mile Acceleration (e.t./mph): 13.55/104.86
WS6: 1/4-Mile Acceleration (e.t./mph): 14.14/101.05
Cobra: 1/4-Mile Acceleration (e.t./mph): 14.05/101.05

Why is there an almost 4 mph, and .6 sec difference in the F-Bodies?
The drive trains are exactly the same, except for the Air Box. There isn't that much to be gained from the SS to WS6 air box or vice versa. That has to be ranked in the top 10 healtiest 100% stock LT1s ever.

those times aren't that far off, hell, I ran better than that when I was stock.

Pulled a 13.76 @ 102.8, with a 2.1 60'...
