Quick question about shifting...

I just bought a 1999 Camaro SS and it's a six-speed manual. I've never driven a manual before and I'm getting pretty good at it. My question, though, is at about what speeds do shift to each gear when I'm racing? Do I just want to get close to the redline? And also, at about what speeds should I be shifting when I'm just regularly driving around like to and from work? Thanks.

Re: Quick question about shifting...

you shift shift based on rpms not your speed, basicaly when you are racing you should try to shift right at the red line (assuming your car is mostly stock), when you are driving around town you need to get a feel for your car and kinda figure it out for yourself. the best way to learn is to just drive you will figure it all out for yourself

Just listen to the engine you will know when it wants you to shift.

Re: Quick question about shifting...

get a shift light, the LS1 tachs are WELL known for being 2-400rpms off in the upper rpm range.

mine was triggering the shift light at 5700rpms...and the light was set for 6100.

Re: Quick question about shifting...

Around town you don't really need to go over 2500 rpm but it's completely up to you. Once you start to hear the engine get a little loud is when it's time to shift. For racing just go until 5800ish and then shift.
