questions about replacing window motor in '95 Camaro

Does anyone know if GM dealerships use new rivets to hold the window motor on, or do they use screws? The reason I ask is because I have had this window motor replaced before at a Chevy dealership, and I don't have a drill, so I am hoping I don't get the entire thing opened and find out I can't do anything about it.

Also, the window on the door that has the messed up window motor wiggles back and forth, does that mean it is just off track, or could the regulator be messed up? What does the regulator do?

Don't know what the dealership does to attach a new motor. If you have something loose, you just need to open up the door panel and take a look at what is going on. There is a window motor replacement guide and even a video of the regulator operation on my Tech Page.

From what I've learned from shoebox, plus my own window motor replacement:

When you order a replacement motor, it comes with small bolts/nuts to replace the rivets that you remove to extricate the old motor. Shoebox's website has great pictures of this process. I'd assume that the dealership would use the same procedure.

Remove the interior trim, find out for sure what is loose inside your door, and then decide what you need to fix.

Did you use a GM one or did you use one from Autozone/similar?

I got my stuff from GM. I ordered replacement motors for both windows, and they came with the bolts/nuts.

But you could easily get the appropriate bolts/nuts at any hardware store.

I actually replaced my window motor today using Shoebox guide and when I took apart the door I saw that the window motor was attached useing screws but no holes were drilled, so somehow someone replaced the motor without drilling holes in the door I guess. I had to drill holes to be able to do this and I would like to thank Shoebox for making a guide which made it way easier for me. I guess whoever replaced the motor last was able to do it without the holes.

you can easily do it without drilling holes in your door panel, it just takes patience. you have to hold the window up while someone else takes apart all the window tracks, and then sticks the motor assembly still bolted to the rest of the innards out of the door. what sucks is when the window freezes in the fully down position and you have to wrestle with it before you have even started unbolting anything

We have specific forums for specific topics.... "window motor" doesn't belong on "LT1 EngineTech. Moving to "General....." forum

I will be replacing both of mine, just ordered them. Thanks a lot for all your input, especially the shoebox guide I had no idea how to do this.

It's fun seeing a topic I made 5 years ago that I don't remember making.

So I guess the question is: "Did you ever get your window motor replaced and the window realigned?"

Yes to the OP, Mine had the motor/ r2 by the dealership long ago and they replaced the rivets as they just r2 the whole regulator assy. Cheap a$$ aluminum rivets that waller out easy. As mine loosened and stripped the teeth on the motor causing erratic movement. I just replaced with bolts and lock nuts. (this will make it easy on the next motor change...)

Re: questions about replacing window motor in '95 Camaro

Well since this thread was brought back...lol

When I got my camaro back from Jupiter Chevrolet way back in 2001 (i think) I had my window motors replaced under warranty (aftermarket) and they were replaced with nuts and bolts. I have since replaced the motors re-using those bolts and nuts.
