Question on V6 to v8 swap???

I was just wondering, in order to do a v6 to v8 swap, can i just swap out the v6 k-member for a v8 one in order to accommadate the engine??? i have this project in mind where i have a v8 car and i want to swap out all the stuff from the v8 car to a v6. it will be a 4th gen project, 93-97. also, now that i just thought of it, does making a v6 car into a v8 mess with emissions???

thanks guys

Carlos

That sounds like a fun project. I'd recommend dropping the entire k-member out with the engine/transmission/front suspension attached and swapping it into the V6 car as 1 part. Also swap the driveshaft, rear differential, wiring harness, hoses, fuel pump and lines, guages and all the other little detail parts.

correct, but if he already has a complete running V8 donor car it is do-able.

Trying to do the swap one part at a time would be a mistake.

Re: Question on V6 to v8 swap???

Thanks for the response guys. Just asking because there just seems to be a lot more cheap V6 cars out there than V8's. I would prefer a V8 to V8 swap, but if the V6 is doable with a V8 donor car already available, then i might just go that route. Thanks again.

Yes, it's as easy as swapping the K-member, engine, tranny, driveshaft, rear axle, computer. Using the same years will save alot of wiring headaches and having a Helm manual will get you through anything that you run into.

Unless your really up to it, I wouldn't do this.
I would simply trade your V6 in on a V8 car.
There is alot to this swap if it done 100% correct (There is more than just the Power Train!!!!!). Plus, since your doing so much all at once, I PROMISE you'll have headaches ALL along the way. Plus to buy a donor car, any little things you'll need, tools, and the time and energy spent, alignment, It would still be cheaper to buy a V8 car.

I know a guy that did this, he did a full V6 to V8 swap, the only thing that he didn't swap was the tail lights... I promise there is a ton of work. So if you decide to do this, I would suggest going to ebay and buying a GM shop manual, and clearing out a few weekends.

Don't let these guys discourage you. If you already have the V8 donor car it is not that difficult to swap the necessary parts over.

When this project becomes a nightmare is when someone tries to do it without a donor car, buying each part individually.

Granted, you will need some mechanical ability to do this, as well as the time and place, but it is not unrealistic to think it is a viable project.

Its a viable project, just not a cost effective project.
He could sell his current car, save a couple grand, and buy a car thats good to go. I don't think I can be convinced this is a swap that is worth the time, money and effort. If I was him I'd sell my car and keep my eyes open for a good used V8 car. I have seen some heavily modded LT1, and early years LS1 cars go fairly cheap lately.

How is it not cost effective? He already has the V8 donor car, it is just a matter of time for him to transfer the parts.

Now, if he had to pay someone to do the work I might agree with you, but assuming he does it himself this project should not cost much at all. The cost will be associated with "wear items" he decides to replace in the process like the clutch, fuel filter, brake pads, rotors, etc...

He already has all the required parts. There is no cost there.

Re: Question on V6 to v8 swap???

IF you already have the donor car DO it, im physically doing one right now (well a shop locally is), i wrecked my z in the rear 1.5 months ago.. swapping into a 98v6 i had a 00z.... i had my z payed off, and i got the v6 for dirty cheap!.... i took a 10k loan out... go alot of stuff... ill add it now

- now... if oyu already have the v6/v8 paid off.. and still have money... this is about 7-8k worth of stuff i ordered.. and being put into my project.. yes.. i basically paid what a high milleage ls1 would cost, but this is by no means a stock ls1 anymore cant wait to crank my baby up!

ps - to see pics of the two cars.. click linky in my sig, has MANY pics of before/after wreck, and the new black one im swapping into!

Re: Question on V6 to v8 swap???

Klypto, this was exactly what I was thinking. Because I was thinking of doing a dirt cheap T-top v6 to full donor V8 swap. The V8 I have now is a hardtop.

How much is this swap costing since you are doing it in a shop???

Re: Question on V6 to v8 swap???

im paying them around $1700... not sure if thats cheap or expensive, but thunder racing refused to do the swap... guess too many problems could happen... and the shop im getting to do it... there great, and the owner actually listens to me.. lol

Re: Question on V6 to v8 swap???

Alright, sounds good. Looks like I might go the v6 to v8 swap then. keep me posted on the progress of your car and whether it turns out great or not. If i can swap cheaply and buy some power parts just like you, then i am willing to spend the money so that i can not only have a Z28, but a way more powerful (and better handling) Z28.
