question about the M.A.F.
ok, here goes, i cant wait till i can get the proper cables to scan my car and i wanted to try and fix it. so i did some checking and heres what i got.
my car is a 1994 z28 and for some reason the car runs exactly the same with the m.a.f. completly out of the car. is this right?
seems to me that the car should run bad or change in some way if i unhook the m.a.f. right?
all the voltage values are correct at the plug and all the rubber air hoses are clean and free of cracks and such.
i have a constant ses light and my fans run at all times.
i replaced the fan rely and the coolant temp sensors and the fans still run all the time. the temp gauge works correctly and i cant understand why the fans are running like this.
any ideas? how bout that m.a.f.?
any ideas on that?

Re: question about the M.A.F.
Your car is running in what is commonly known as "limp mode". It is a default setting that the computer uses to get you home when it sees a sensor failure. It could be the MAF as well as some other things. I did a quick search for limp mode and there were several threads about it. Sorry, I just woke up and did not same the link to the search. Get your car scanned for free at Autozone. They will give all the codes that are set. Post back with what they are and someone here with more knowledge than me will be able to help you.
Good Luck,
PJ

Re: question about the M.A.F.
Did you remember to clear the codes after you replaced everything? If you did or didn't reinstall the MAF ,clear the codes an if the SES light comes back then scan for codes, that way you are only getting a code(s) for what is immediatly wrong, with no old codes.
Re: question about the M.A.F.
ok, but i cant get it scanned anywhere, nobody has that 16pin obd1 connector.
im just gonna buy the m.a.f. sensor today and try that, i think that to be in limp mode, if the map sensor was bad, g.m. really rely on this to run, and the same with the tps.
actually now that im thinking about it the only sensor that didnt make a running difference was the m.a.f. and of course i didnt check the 02`s but i dont think they would throw it in limp would they?

Re: question about the M.A.F.
Still think you are barking up the wrong tree. Blindly throwing parts at it is a waste of time and money. Buy a scanner. It will save you time and money in the long run.

ok,ok you were right. well i bought this obd1 scanner, it`s a cheap one but i`ll see if it will work, i also got the pinout from your tech page to hook it up to the proper pins, thank you for your help on this nightmare, it`s finally almost done.
i`ll reply tonite after i scan and hopefully fix the limp in problem and tell everyone what it was that`s been driving me nutts
Re: question about the M.A.F.
ok so i just tried to scan it with one of those cheapo scanners and it didnt work.
can i just cut off the obd2 connector and just match the wires to my obd1 connector? if so i`ll take it back to my shop 2morrow and scan it with the 12 pin connector on there.

Did you buy an actual scanner, or just one of those cheap $20 boxes that short out the pins and make the SES light flash? Those wont work on your car. You need a proper OBD1 scanner with a OBD2 cable. Or, just "adapt" it like Rob says. HERE is his picture showing the process.
Go spend a couple hundred bucks on a scanner. You'll get lots of use out of it, and it will save you money in the long run. I convinced my father to buy one last year... so now whenever I need it I just go borrow it from him!

well i tried to scan it with a brand new snap on scanner, and i input it as a 1995 car, for some reason the scanner kept saying obd2. then told me to use the obd2 connector with the #9 key in it, i tried this like 10 times and i kept getting " no communication with computer, is key on "
and yes the scanner i bought was a cheap 20.00 one that was suppost to flash the light. the package said that it would scan a 1994 camaro 5.7 so i thought id give it a try.
i spliced the obd1 connector back on to my wiring harness and im gonna try to scan it tomorrow as a 1994 car and see if it will scan, i guess if it dont then i maybe have a bad pcm or something.
hopefully it will work though.
Re: question about the M.A.F.
One of the cheapest ways to "scan" is to get a cable from AKM Electronics and download FreeScan (can you guess the price?
) or TTS DataMaster (free for the first 20 data logs). Take the $20 scanner back and insist on getting your money back. It will not work on anything newer than a 93 LT1. If it says it will work, it is mislabeled.

Re: question about the M.A.F.
I say bite the bullet and buy a good scanner. I got my AutoXray scanner, 5 different cables, and a nice hard carry case for $300. This is by far the best $300 I've spent in a long time. It's already saved me twice. I recently just picked up the PC Data link cable and disk for my scanner and can download updates off the 'net too. Of course, this scanner can scan all kinds of cars, but if you're just concerned with your F-body specifically, then get the Freescan software or Datamaster stuff with the adaptor cable.
Once you get the code off your car, just search that code on this site and you'll find your answer.

Re: question about the M.A.F.
how bout this,
does anyone here have a scanner that they would like to sell?
im not made of money but i think i could afford a used one, ( maybe 500.00 or so )
if anyone here has one they wanna sell, please reply.
oh and just F.Y.I. i woke up with the flu today and had to call in sick so i couldn`t take the car up and try the scanner at my shop.
my boss was laughing because i drive a tow truck on call 24/7 and i actually had to call in sick!!
the first time in 2 years though so he didnt seem to care, hopefully im better tomorrow and i can take it there.
the guy at autozone said his friends z28 did the same thing when his headgaskets blew, now i dont have any kinda smoke comming from anywhere and it doesnt seem to be loosing coolant. Is this a possibilty?
he`s got me worried, i relaay after everything else dont wanna put headgaskets on right now.
oh well i hope not. let me know about a scanner though.
thank you
jim
