Purpose of Exhaust Crossover Pipe

I've been researching exhaust improvements and would like to go duals if the install cost won't be too high. Reading so many references to "X" or crossover pipes, just what purpose do they serve? Has anyone had any negative experience with straight duals without the crossover in it?

Re: Purpose of Exhaust Crossover Pipe

it has to do with balancing out the pressure in each tube

also affects the resonance i think which changes the tone.

most people seem to indicate the Xpipe sounds better and yields more torque.

you can run without a crossover, but i think it's better to have one.
