Problem with 95Z28

The first time I noticed the problem was yesterday. I would be at a light and take off at a normal pace in first gear (A4) it would rev up to about 2K rpm's and then it would hesistate or choke for just a split second, it eventually went away, but when I parked it was running rough and the ses light came on. Fast foward to this morning I was on the interstate doing about 70mph, when all the sudden the rpm's dropped down to ~1500rpm then jumped up to ~3000rpm , when that happend the ses light came on and then a loud bump or pop maybe backfire? looked back and there was a ton of smoke. Then my engine shut off so I coasted to an exit and looked at the engine, could not see anything tried to start it for a couple seconds it would not start. So I waited about 3-4 min. and tried it start it again and it cranked up just fine. drove it the rest of the way with no problems.... Anybody want to give a whack at it? The ses light is off now, any way to check the past ses with an akm cable and laptop?
Thanks in advance

My 94Z had the same symptoms as yours is doing. Sounds like the opti-spark is on its way out. That fixed mine.

Trouble codes will be stored until the PCM is reset. You can still check them.

Re: Problem with 95Z28

Ok shoebox I checked the codes that were stored and here are the ones that were in there: 16:lo-res failure;36:hi-res failure. So I am thinking it has something to do with the opti? but there where a few other weird codes that came up for my a/c which I just got fixed (ac clutch) the codes were: MALF 66:A/C Press Sensor Open/Short. MALF 67: A/C Press Sensor Degraded. MALF 69: A/C Clutch Circuit Open. MALF 70 A/C clutch relay fault (ODM). MALF 22: TPS Low. I used freescan and those are the trouble codes I got.

Re: Problem with 95Z28

I'd reset the PCM and see what comes back. It does sound like you might have opti problems. You might want to first check the harness on both ends for a good and clean connection.
Maybe some a/c stuff going on, too.

Re: Problem with 95Z28

Update. I replace the ignition control module. It seemed to have fixed the problem but after driving it for about 1hr on my way to school with no problems I pull into a spot and sit with the engine running after about 10min the engine cut off no sputtering no bogging nothing just cut off. So I tried to crank it again cranked up and idled/ran fine. When I got home I started messing with it it after if ran for a bit it cut off just as it did at school It never stalled out when I had the RPM above idle say around 1000 ran fine. Then the SES light came on. I took it to a friend with autotap the Code was I believe the code was 33 or 34 saying something about the bar too high or low forgot! lol Anyways the autop measured ~4.5V on the BAR. no matter if I revved it about to 5K RPM the BAR was still 4.5V. So I took the connection off the MAP sensor Disconnected it completly and the damn thing was still measuring 4.5V! Is that the problem? That is the only trouble code coming up!! I have a htpp 3 installed could that be a problem in reading the codes correctly?

Re: Problem with 95Z28

Does anyone know if the HTPP 3 would affect the map sensor?

Re: Problem with 95Z28

Well it is werid when we pulled the connection off of the MAP sensor it was still reading ~4.5 volts, as if something else is controlling the sensor or bypassing it... I dunno
