Power Window Help

I replaced my drivers side power window motor after the window wouldnt go up. It seemed to fit the description of a faulty motor: eventually going up all the way after waiting, then trying again, waiting, trying again, etc.

After replacing the motor, nothing happens. Well, the window did go up the rest of the way though! But it still wont go down.

It seems like the switch isnt contacting anything when I push down on it. I've looked it all over and it isnt cracked or anything.

Any ideas on what I'm missing or how to diagnosis this?

Thanks!
CL

The PW set-up in the 4th gens has to be the worst PW system GM has EVER built in any car. Did you buy a brand new PW motor or take one out of an existing car? I ask because you have a 50-50 chance of putting a faulty motor in if it is used. Buy new and look at replacing the switch as well.

You can put a test light or meter on the motor harness and operate the switch to see if it is getting power.

It's a new motor...

OK, just to make sure I'm reading this right....a test light where the plug connects to the motor, right?

And Shoebox--great website! I followed your walk-through on the window motor swap. Thanks!

Yes. It should light no matter if the switch is pushed up or down. It just reverses the polarity to change motor direction.

OK...so I finally got back to tinkering with my window--yes, I'm lazy

The test light doesnt light at the plug that connects to the power window motor.

The test light lights up for both the wires coming off the passenger side switch, but doesnt light for either of the wires coming off the drivers side switch.

However, it does light up when held to the metal connector part on the back of the switch (the part that touches the plug-in connector) regardless of what switch is pressed.

So now what?

Well, if it lights properly at the back of the switch (hard to tell with your description) and it does not at the end of the wire to the motor, the wire or connector has a problem.

Sorry, in hindsight i realized my description wasnt clear.

Neither the dark blue or light gray wires that are connected to the harness on the window switch light, nor do the wires on the end of the harness that plugs into the motor.

Is there a way to trouble shoot this anymore?

I think it has something to do with the switch assembly. When you push down on the driver side window button, it feels "loose", almost like it isnt making contact.

You could have a bad switch. That is not uncommon. Though, I hear they are on backorder everywhere.
