power steering pump??

I went to get my p/s fluid flushed cause i started hearing a whine when i made hard right turns at high speeds.. the guy showed me that i was out of fluid and that their was a leak stain around the altenator.. he suggested a new pump total came about 300. is it hard to change the pump or is there a rebuild kit. I might also go to the dealer they did change my steering rack about 14000 miles ago..

Funny you should ask, just changed my pump two days ago. I also changed the waterpump at the same time so it made it more accesible to get to the ps pump. I would suggest that if you are going to do it yourself that you invest in a proper puller and pull the pulley off of the pump which gives you easy access to the two bolts holding it on. I don't know what the price of a new pump is but if they want $300 for parts and labor that doesn't sound too bad. It is a pita.

300 isn't bad to do that kind of job. when I had to do mine they quoted me WAY more. so, I just did it with the help of my uncle, in about 3-4 hours start to finish with breaks and a few runs to the part store.

300$ is a good price. I'd pay someone to do it, I don't want to do another one (MAJOR pita)

I don't know how everyone else did it but if you take off the three bolts that are holding the pump n everyting to the block off, that takes off the whole pump and you can then take off the pulley a lot easier cuz it's not in the car anymore. just a thought.

just pull the hose thats connected to the pump and let it spill into a catch can of some sort.

With spirited driving it does cause boil over. It's going to happen no matter what, it's just the way it is. The pump is creating a lot of flow that just isn't used and ends up getting cooked. That's why there are power steering coolers installed on the later years. I ended up getting a lower output pump since I do some track days and burnt mine up on the first event.

The job itself is cake after getting the pulley off. You need the appropriate tool to do so, and you can borrow it from your local auto zone or Kragen.

If you're interested in the pump, and if you have any autox in your future I recommend it just from prior experience, do a search for turn 1 pumps. If you're just going to be doing city driving then you can get away with the stocker.

You already have one. they came on the SS only until 01 or 02. Its the small aluminum tube that you can see that is a part of the upper radiator hose. you will still have issues though, its better than nothing but not the solution. you can try running another p/s cooler, the mini radiator type, in conjunction with it to help cool it down more. you can pick those up at summit or kragen for cheap.

Just to clarify, the cooler came on all v8 f bodies starting 01 or 02. Before that you could only get it via the SS or FireHawk/ WS.6 package during the ls1 years. the lt1s externaly mounted resovoir didnt have that problem.
