Possible headlight relay problem?
Possible headlight relay problem?
Well I just posted a thread about a firebird headlight wiring problem I thought I had but ended up just being stops, well there was indeed a problem electronically. The passenger side headlight had been bridged to the driver side by an appliance cord (quite the rig job let me tell ya) by a previous owner and after correcting the situation and getting the headlight motor connectors plugged into their designated power connectors the driver side is the only one functioning. We did a continuity test and both sides are getting juice, its just the passenger side isn't operating, the headlamp works but the motor isn't turning the assembly up or down. I am naturally assuming the headlight switch isn't communicating to the passenger side headlight motor but I have no idea where the relays are? Any help would be appreciated. I assume this may be up shoeboxs' alley

Re: Possible headlight relay problem?
Since you know the motor works and you know it is getting juice, my hunch would be the control module is shot... turning off juice IMMEDIATELY when it sees any sort of current draw.
The control module is located behind the driver side headlight. These are expensive so if you could test it by trying a bud's in your car, that would be best

Re: Possible headlight relay problem?
well as luck has it I have a 95 V6 firebird that I hit a deer with that I've been planning on parting out but im keeping it for the time being for a personal parts car for my TA. such as my passenger side lock actuator and what not along with the control module cause my firebirds works I know for a fact. I may even just use the headlight support instead of drilling my own stops, cause the firebird has them. After you showed me the link in the other thread, I went and looked at my firebird later on and seen all 4 sitting in there. Anyway all I need to know is where exactly behind the driver side light the module is and what it looks like and I'll be set most likely. (Im an extreme doof when it comes to electronics, sorry for the ignorance). I have a pretty good idea when it comes to getting power combinations for a motor to run well, but am finding out how much i should look into studying maintenance situations a little more than just matching a cam to a set of heads for power gains. Thanks Brent.

Re: Possible headlight relay problem?
Thanks alot brent, I just now got around to fixing this gremlin because of my work schedule and a few other unfortunate things going wrong with the car. I went ahead and pulled the control module off my firebird which was very easy to find once I went and looked right after posting that near demoralizing post above lol. Upon swapping the old one out for the one out of my V6 the driver side went up and back down like before which was good, but the passenger side although working cycled up and down 5 times before coming to a stop. This concerned me but I went ahead and tested the current draw cut the CM does that you described happening from the stops once the arm hits them, so I put a screw driver and lined it up perfectly to act as a stop for the headlight lower shaft arm once it came around a full turn and sure enough the current was cut and the motor stopped!! So that problem is fixed and it was the control module just as you said. Thanks alot brent, you are definatly the resident firebird headlight expert!!
Re: Possible headlight relay problem?
Excellent!
Yeah, if you look on my page, I talk about the cycling up/down/up/down non stop issue as well. Is that how you knew to make your own stop or did you just figure that one out? At any rate, glad the page was of at least a little value to ya!

Re: Possible headlight relay problem?
no you taught me about making my own stops, and I used that education to do the screwdriver trick to test the current pull from the CM that you also taught me, so basically everything that happened today was from you and your page
