Opinions of possible car purchase...

I know that it's extremely hard to tell without having the car in the air, but these are photos of the LT1 underside that I'm looking to buy.

It's an oil leak, but hard to tell where from. The guy "SAID" that it doesn't use any oil, but this is what I saw when I got down and checked out. The car runs strong. There's not studder or anything at WOT.

163K on body... new motor at 100K. It has the stock chip and a modified chip.

There was no smoke on startup. There was a slight tick, but I heard that was common from the valvetrain. The tires are in decent shape, but I already have my eyes on a set of Black ZR-1s if I make the purchase.

Maybe you guys might know....

Here are photos of the rest of the car...

One thing that stands out is how clean that underchassis is besides the oil, it is completely rust free which is a good thing. As for the oil leak, it is hard to tell unless you visually inspect it or take it to a shop to have a prelimary inspection done before purchasing. How much is he asking?

The underside looks like the effects of the LT1 rear intake manifold leak. My '97 has yet to be fixed and it looks just like that.

The asking price is $3k......

Rear intake manifold leak... How hard of a fix is that. I do all of my own work.. Is taking this intake off as easy as the LS1 intake?

Its pretty straightforward and easy to do, not much more difficult then an LS1 intake.

I haven't done this fix yet, but there are instructions on the Project Trans Am site:

I would see if he would bite for 2500.00, but if not, I would take it for 3 grand.

Don't know enough about the car, year, mechanical condition, options etc. to make a guess. Try Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com or NADA to get some ballpark firgures. If its rust free you could probably part it out for 3 grand so the price is not that outrageous FWIW.

My guess is either rear main seal leaking or rear of intake manifold, or both.
Now, if you have to pay a dealer to do this, you're looking at about $2,000. If you do it yourself, maybe $75 and a weekend.

I wouldn't worry about that leak. Most LT1s leak a little anyway. It looks pretty clean, and I'd buy it for $3,000 in a heartbeat, especially if its a 6-speed.

i see many oil leaks per day , and its hard to tell whats leaking , without standing under the car with a flashlight . could me alot of things , maybe the oil sending unit might be leaking , check drain plug gasket . looks like it at one time might of had a leaking oil filter or drain plug and mad a mess ..

take it to a car wash and hose that sucker of with degreaser , but no where near the front of motor underneth the car , the underside . and then drive it around then look for a leak then . you will be able to see it better if you even have a oil leak .
