Opinions on HOT or COLD oil changes.
Re: Opinions on HOT or COLD oil changes.
The absolute only advantage to draining hot is getting the small amount of oil out of the pan that otherwise would stay their due to the higher viscosity of colder oil. I'd guess maybe an ounce or two extra. We're talking the film left on the pan being thicker than if it were hot. That's sooo little oil.
The rest of the oil "up in the engine" is going to drain down into the pan. It's not going to come to life and say "Oh no! The drain plug IS NOT OUT! I must stay up in the valves! DO NOT PROCEED TO THE OIL PAN! ATTENTION ALL OIL MOLECULES! DO NOT PROCEED TO THE OIL PAN!".

I like to do it warm, but not too hot. The oil flows much better warm than cold. I also let it drain for a long time, probable about a 1/2 hour or so. I let it drain until the drips are slow enough that I can wipe the drain hole and get the plug back in before another drip comes out. I figure by that time it is drained pretty good.

Reminds me of my "thrifty" uncle. Puts the expensive oil in his Triumph, runs it for only 1000 miles before changing. Then he uses THAT (drained) oil in his wifes car! LOL!

I change mine when it is hot, It just seems to run out alot easier. Plus that is just how I have always done it. I also let it drain for about an hour when I change my oil, it gives me time to check the other small maintenence items whil I am at it.

I do that too. I never noticed if it helped, but it made me feel better... and that's what this post is all about
