Oil pump question

I did put a new build engine in my car, and also installed a new oil pump, but the thing is, I didn't prime the oil pump, and the engine already in, the intake on it too. Is any way I can make oil pressure at the first start up without damaging the engine, or I have to take that intake off and do prime?

Re: Oil pump question

Removing the intake and using an SBC prime tool or an external pressurizing device (pre-oiler) that connects to an oil gallery plug are the only options I know of.

Re: Oil pump question

We did a try just start it up without prime the oil pump, and I just can't believe, the car just started up at the first key turn, and did pick up a good strong oil pressure in less than 2 seconds.

(may be I just got lucky.)

Re: Oil pump question

i would have at least disconnected the ignition and let the starter turn it over for a while first, but it's your motor.

Yes, you did. However, 2 seconds no oil without a prime may well have taken years off the life of your bearings.

Like he said, it's your motor.
