A friend of mine is ******* me constantly and keeps bringing this up. He doesn't seem to have anything better to do lately so he just tries to annoy me. Anyways, a while back I told him my car would go 160. He is trying to make me look retarded for saying this and I still don't think i am wrong.

I have a 97 z28 a4 with 2.73 gears. I got Z rated tires, hypertech tuning (only to remove speed limiter) (Could raise redline if needed, but i have no reason), some suspension work, as well as a few bolt ons.

I have no where near me to safely max my car out and I am not crazy enough to do it, so Im gonna show him this tomorrow. Please explain what the top speed will be and whatever else you have to say.

Main thing going for me is 2.73 gears. My cars 1st gear is good till over 50. 2nd is good till almost 100 and 3rd has a lot of room in it. Fastest I have been was 120 and it didn't feel too bad, lot of room left for more speed.

Im guessing that i would need to leave the shifter in 3rd as od wouldn't top out as high.

 

I think most of the car mags were able to ring out 155 mph on LT1 powered camaros/firebirds. This was with a T56, though. I would expect that an auto lt1 would be a few miles slower.

 

highest I've hit is 150mph.. the tach is around 5000rpm in 5th gear (Have a picture of it.) The car was still accelerating, and I've heard it will, until the redline/rev limiter kicks in.

HEY MAN I WENT A LEAST 160mph IN MY CAR BECASUE I HAD THE SPEEDO PAST THE 150 MARK, AND WHEN I MEAN PAST THE MARK I WAS WAY PAST 150mph. THE NIDDLE STARTED TO POINT AT THE STEERING COLUM. I DID THIS ONE DAY RACING A WS6 6-SPEED,WE WERE DOOR TO DOOR THE HOLE TIME. I have taken my car to the limit ONCE (although I think I hit it 3 or 4 times on that "one" occasion!). It WILL hit 160 mph no question. Mine is also an A4 w/2.73's. Basically, the car would redline 3rd gear, and stay there ... to get it to upshift into 4th meant pulling my foot off the gas, at which point the car quickly starts to decelerate (due to the high wind resistance at that speed) so to compensate I had to put my foot back down, and that would force the downshift to 3rd and again it would climb to redline and sit there (but that speed is pretty much around ~165 mph actually).

Your buddy A) doesn't know what he's talking about, and/or B) is just bugging you to see if you'll prove him wrong. If you don't feel like risking things (probably safer that way) you can take our word for it ... no I swear.

 

I dont know my car shifts into fourth and will still gain speed,i just can WOT becuse it will kick the car down a gear, but it will shift into fouth and still pick up speed.

 

I believe that is correct. You can't use 4th gear and WOT.

 

Stock car? If so you won't have enuff power to reach much over 160. Now as far as a car with lets say 600 hp and 2.73's would prolly hit 200.

 

The '93 camaro z28 was rated at 152mph by Car and Driver, back in 1993...

 

Actually, the tranny WILL shift into 4th even at WOT, but like I said, NOT with my 2.73's. With 4.10's, that's a different story.

With 2.73's though, what's the point of trying to accelerate in 4th?! Hell, at highway speeds you can still hit 2nd gear! Why on earth would you want to "accelerate" in 4th?!

Your friend doesnt have a clue. I have a 6 speed and Ive taken my Z up to the 155mph mark a couple of times. Im pretty sure she would keep going to 160 but not too much more. And both times were when the car was pretty much stock with the only mods, CAI and Catback.

ive burried the needle in my car a few times, and Ive been in a couple others that have done the same. All with very minimal bolt ons.

 

i got mine past 150 with 2.73's... so thats almost 3rd gears redline...

but i wasnt really paying attention to the needle at that point...

 

Ceramic pads or parachute you better be glad there was plenty of room inbetween you and that car.
