Anything that comes in a can and makes claims of increased horsepower is BS. If you want to waste your money go for it. Live & Learn.

if want higher octane pay 10 cents fro 89

I would say buy a higher octane at the pump.. as figure 1 bottle of juice per tank (say 10 galons) is about 3-4 bucks.. but if you get the higher octane at the pump it is geernaaly about 10 cent more per gallon so $1 per tank.. also some of the big companies put extra cleaner into their 93 which actaully helps

bottom line compression stroke over 10:1 needs higher octane than 87... I have a firebird with 3.8 that has compression stroke of about 9ish:1 if I put 87 octane in car runs fine but when I pay 10 cent more 89 octane it runs about the same except can feel a little more power on the aceelration around 30/40 mph and also improves gas milage by about 2/3/mpg. but I tend to pay the extra 20 cent for the 93 octane as that seems to improve my highway milage by about 5 mpg and I drive to many interstate miles per week to know that

not sure if this was supposed to be a response and you accidentally put it as a new topic...

but...

you realize those bottles of "octane boost"...when they say it raises your octane by 4 points....they mean 0.4

so adding it to 87 octane will yield 87.4

definatly not worth it...they are bogus.

If it does not knock, more octane will actually slow it down... The goal is to have only enough octane to keep it from knocking, anything more is a waste of money.

I run standard 93 octane on the street and at the track mix just enough 103 to achieve a 94 1/2 rating. That is all my car requires at full throttle.

I have used 87 octane for the last two years. I am all stock, and have not had any problems. My best time is 13.3 at 107mph. I tried the higher octane for about two weeks while racing at the strip and saw no increases.

Maybe you'd get that from a NOS 30 shot.

On a side note, I heard race horse **** gives you 50 HP!

octane booster as said in other posts only boosts a fraction of a point of octane. For instance if it says it boosts by 4 that means it boosts 93 octane to 93.4 and NOT to 97. Don't be fooled

Scan your PCM. If you have no "knock retard", you don't need more octane. If you do have knock retard, you are losing performance. In that case, put a can in and see if it helps. In any case, you will not see an "instant 30HP".

I guess this needs to be merged with the "NOS octane boost" thread.

As always, Injuneer is correct. Unless you are worried about knock, any extra octane will not help you. In fact, it is possible that it could actually slow you down.

As for having a high compression motor, and it even states on the gas cap "premium gasoline only", and you have been putting 87 in it, first off you are foolish, second, you may notice your car knocking and pingning (not good). Finally, your car will run a million times better when it has the correct octane level in it.

the MPG is true or I am getting nearly 400 highways miles a tank on a 3.8 with the 89octane(or 93) by pure magic when I used to get 350ish with 87octane... but I do agree 100% that it doesn't change hp like they claim ; but I wasn't talking about hp just simply saying if you want higher octane they sell it at the pump and if you do the math it is usually cheaper at the pump..

also just a question to add on the MPG issue... has anybody tried the K&N FPI kit on a 3.8, does it give any increased mpg? I am not worried about the HP increase they claim with the kit as this is for my commuter car
