What kind of a check do they do for emissions? Many states simply plug into the ALDL connector on the OBD-II cars. Usually, if there are no codes in the PCM, and if no more than two of the emissions systems show "not ready", you will pass. No tailpipe test. If that is the case where you live, you have to eliminate the codes for the missing after-cat O2 sensors. You can do that by plugging O2 "sims" in place of the sensors, or having the codes "programmed out" by someone who knows how to eliminate the "system not ready" flag. The "sims" are getting harder to find, since the EPA has cracked down on the manufacturers with huge fines.

What did you do with the AIR and EGR systems? Same there - have the codes programmed out.

Next - do they do a "visual" check? Technically, LT's are a violation since they relocate the cats (which you don't have). Then there's the missing cats - another problem. Then if you have eliminated AIR and EGR you will have a problem with that. At least if the inspector knows what he is looking at. Even the most uniformed person will know whether the cats are there.

If they do a tailpipe test, don't even bother showing up.... unless its a private station and you have a $50 bill.

the owner checked and the programmer said 65 bucks to pass. the air and egr were deleted also.he would have to reprogam it.in 96 do you send the chip in or the whole computer? would reprogamming it hurt performance? also would I have to reprogram it again after(if I do ) pass?love to have the car, but its alot of hassle!

There is no removable chip in the 94 and newer PCM's. You either send your PCM to the programmer, or you get him to send you a tune as a file, but you need software to load it.

if it does plug into obd connector with no visual as long as you have no check engine codes it should pass
