Do your shorties have a CARB number? Give him that and tell him to pass you. Or just take it somewhere else.

Question

TBSPW:
Which inspection station was it? Try calling Trenton and ask them ... if Trenton says you should be OK and assuming you don't fail on noise level (BTW anyone know what the noise test and specs are in NJ?) get the Trenton person's name for a reference and go to another inspection station.
Good Luck ...

Are your "shorties" CARB approved? If not, you are out of luck. Do they relocate the cats? If so, you are out of luck.

Readers Digest version of NJ Motor Vehicle Statute:

39:3-70 Loud, Defective or No Muffler

1. All motor vehicles having a combustion motor to be equipped with muffler.
2. Must prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke.
A neighbor of mine with a 92 Mustang with a Kenne Bell S/C'd 305 in it recently failed for excessive muffler noise at the South Brunswick station. He asked the inspector to cite the allowed noise level. The inspector could not state what it was. He asked the inspector if he used a certifed/calibrated dB meter to measure the noise from his car. The inspector said no. After several return trips to the station, and an extended discussion with the station manager, the manager agreed the evaluation was purely subjective, and put a sticker on the car. In my opinion, the car as extremley loud.... almost as loud as mine. And my car will not pass the Old Bridge Raceway Park noise standards.

As far as the catback, if its from SLP, they whould be able to supply you with information regarding its legality in NJ. They are located in Toms River, NJ.

Sorry about repeating the Mustang story... forgot I had already posted a response to your same question on the Exhaust forum.
