New member, Purchased 1994 Z28. Updated!

Hello everyone. I just purchased a 1994 5.7L 6 Speed Z28 camaro and it needs some TLC.

To give a little background of myself I was in the dsm scene for a while because I wanted cheap and fast. I was able to get my talon into the 12's very easily and soon got bored of the lame look of the car. So I decided to purchase a camaro.

This car looks as though the previous owners did not take very good care of the car. I checked the oil when I got home today and it was below the low level. So I am going to take it and get an oil change tomorrow.

However, I was curious what you guys would recommend as far as a tune up with the future intentions of performance in the future. I dont want to have to purchase something such as spark plugs/wires etc now and 2 months down the road purchase some performance ones. So I was curious what is recommended for these cars as far as a tune up. This vehicle has 157k miles on it and it looks as though it has seen better days.

Thanks.

I also have a '94 Z like yours. Just changed my wires for the second time since I've owned it with identical Taylor 8mm Spiro Pro's.

The car was running fine, I only changed them because they had 50,000 miles on them. For the heck of it I decided to ohm out each old wire vs. each new replacement. Surprisingly enough the old wires ohm'd out almost identical to the new ones. So I have nothing but GOOD things to say about the Taylor's. Many others here use them also, and I just wanted to back them up with some proof.

NGK TR55 plugs are good cheap plugs to get also.

With that many miles on your Z, and unknown quality of maintenance on it I'd also start changing out all your fluids in the drivetrain, steering, and brakes as well for some cheap insurance.

157 miles? Time for a 383 stroker rebuild

If not, I would get the MSD wires (8.5 mm), but be prepared to get knew harnesses if I recall, the stock ones were too small.

NGK plugs are always good, but the OEM ones last longer (50,000 miles or so).

However, I would wait on doing those ignition stuff. It might be a wives tail but I would do some basic bolt-ons while doing the tune up. I mean like a CAI and full exhaust. One of my friends told me that when you do those, you will need to replace your plugs and wires.

Have fun with F-body

Scan the PCM for any codes.....

And just do a routine tune-up....

Air/Oil/Fuel filters and Plugs....

Also check other members' home pages..ie shoebox, ws6.com, etc... for helpful info.....

And use the seach function at the bottom... Most questions on basic mods have been sked before, and you might find an answer there.....

Oh, by the way... Welcome to the Forum...

Ok, I went ahead and looked under the hood more closely today and WOAH!

All the cables that go to the battery do not have any type of O ring or U ring on the end of the cable, they are all simply stripped and smashed under the terminal. Then I also noticed that the closest injector wire, (the wire/connector that actually connects to the top of the injector plug) has been cut or worn down at one time, so they simply stripped the wire again and twisted them together. Grr! The oil is low, the brake fliud could be filled a little higher and the damn ABS light is on. I checked the ground by the front of the hood for the abs and it looked securely fastened. However I am missing the drivers side wheel well cover so I bet something in there ABS related is messed up, since there isnt any cover.

So now, I need to find the correct O ring connectors for the wires connecting to the battery and crimp them properly and find out where I can get new injector plug wire/connectors that arent going to cost me an arm and a leg. Then after this is all done I need to find out the damn ABS problem. I bet its a speed sensor on one of the wheels though.

Stay with the imports if you are going to be anti-semetic.

exactly.. there happen to be many Jewish F-body owners.. I am one of them..

and just so you know..

all z28's and SS's from 1993-2002 were 5.7L.... so you only need to show the year the model.

some people add their mods ( unfortunately some people add every mod they ever did..) and their track times.

I apologize for the above comment. I didnt mean to offend anyone. I was just fustrated at the time. I cant believe how some people just dont take care of their vehicles. I will also fix my signature. I checked the car out today and it has a major oil leak from the oil pan, but other than that it seems to be in decent shape mechanically. I think the lack of oil was due to the major leak that the car has. I will be replacing that next weekend.

Would you please talk to my friend Dave for me? He's so addicted to the DSM scene (owns several, none of which are finished) that its sickening... especially when he has a C4 Corvette that he refuses to fix!

Why did you buy this car? Sounds like you should have passed on it and purchased a different one. Hopefully you at least got a good deal?

I did get a pretty good deal on the car. It's already paid off and I have big plans. I am going to get the little things fixed and then over the winter I am going to get the engine rebuilt with all my performance mods.

It's a great car. I love how it handles, for a RW drive car it hugs the curves amazing! It just needs some TLC. It's a 10yr old car so I cant expect it to be perfect. But just some minor things that you would expect someone to do maintanance to wasnt done. Oh well, it will be a whole new car when im done with it .

Btw, if your buddy needs any help with his dsm I would be more than willing to help. He should also check out dsmtuners.com they have a whole bunch of resourceful info.

Get a Big16G, 550 injectors, SAFC, and a HP Fuel Pump and he will be into the 12's easy. As long as he has a ACT2600 and slips the clutch at around 5k. Dont drop it unless he wants to be replacing tranny's.

Welcome

Check your spoiler mounted 3rd brake light, I've heard that if both bulbs are burned out that it will signil for the ABS light to come on.

You could find something slippery (gravel/sand) and hit your brakes to see if the ABS works.

I wouldnt go crazy with the mods, get things back to normal first

Good luck-

~Chris

Thanks for the info about the ABS, however I didnt see a third brake light on my car. Perhaps mine didnt come with one? Or am I just overlooking the obvious?

I am planning to fix the little problems with the car and then either rebuild the one I have or look into a 383 stroker. I have a friend with a 305 tpi motor that came out of a vette that he paid near nothing for and he has no need for it so I may end up going that route too. Just depends where the funds land come winter time.

Well, I wouldn't get that TPI for one, if it is what I am thinking it is (82?).

And the third tail light would be on the rear-mounted spoiler (under it)
